I'd love to claim all the credit for this myself, but sadly I can't. A few years ago I was one of about 20 people from a motorcycle mailing list called Ixion who came together and built a heavyweight fighting robot called SMIDSY. SMIDSY's designer is a very acomplished engineer who now works in the automotive industry doing cool things with tomorrow's engines, at the time he was a post-doctoral researcher at Sheffield University. He came up with a folded steel monocoque with 4 wheel drive and forced air cooling, a design that turned out to be robust, reliable and easy to fix. More info: www.smidsy.nethappy days.

That's awesome I was a huge fan of robot wars. SMIDSY was one of my favourite robots. Stands for "Sorry Mate I Didin't See You" if I recall correctly

That's awesome I was a huge fan of robot wars. SMIDSY was one of my favourite robots. Stands for "Sorry Mate I Didin't See You" if I recall correctly Robot wars was primarily a laugh for us. A chance for a group of motorcyclists to get together with beer, BBQ and machine tools. Sadly though some of the other competitors took it rather too seriously and in some cases a few egos got involved. Fascinating to watch some of the "characters" behind the scenes, pure comedy without them ever realising it. It's left me with a complete distrust of anything on TV, nothing you see happens because it happens that way, it's all influenced for what some media luvvie thinks makes good telly. I'm not saying it was all a fix, but I'm not saying it wasn't IYSWIM. Craig Charles is a completely sorted bloke BTW. Shame about the bimbo co-presenter. If only they could have had Fred Dibnah doing the presenting from the pits. And you're right, SMIDSY stands for "Sorry Mate I Didn't See You". We're motorcyclists, and as any fule kno, that's what your tw@tty Volvo driver says to the motorcyclist he's just knocked down cos he wasn't looking. www.smidsy.net/why-smidsy.html
