Plaster a bit of furry wallpaper on the drywall, turn down the lights and pop on some sitar music*, it's the Retro Rides Tandoori. I wanted a tandoor oven for years. So a few years ago I built one. If you're unfamiliar with them, a tandoor is a clay oven consisting of a vertical clay tube with sloping sides positioned over a hearth with an air inlet to one side. It produces a very intense heat which is usually used either to cook meat on long skewers or flatbreads on the vertical inside faces of the oven. In a British context we normally associate tandoors with Indian restaurants where commercial gas fired tandoors are often used to cook naan breads and tandoori meats and kebabs. I built mine from a very large flower pot. I cut the bottom out of it and inverted it in a metal cylinder with vermiculite insulation and a firebrick hearth. It makes very good kebabs but the real success is the naans. Nothing beats a homemade naan. Full details are here: www.poptastic.com/tandoor.htmlThe cool thing about owning a tandoor is that anything you cook in it is by definition tandoori food. Thus if you want you can serve your guests genuine tandoori pop-tarts. * and other cliches

Yes, it does wicked spuds Best if used on the end of a skewer to stop a kebab sliding down, then you get a spud basted in kebab juice. Also does a whole chicken quicker than a microwave if you get it hot enough.

Looks good, might have to give it a go.
Silly question though, how do you use it? Light the fire inside then when hot add food? or do you let the fire go out before adding food?
Did you use the pot base as a lid? Does the lid need a hole to help air circulate?

Looks good, might have to give it a go. Silly question though, how do you use it? Light the fire inside then when hot add food? or do you let the fire go out before adding food? Did you use the pot base as a lid? Does the lid need a hole to help air circulate? Light it like a BBQ with a pile of charcoal in the bottom. A bit of experimentation may be required to get the right air flow - I found a "C" shaped fire facing the air hole gave best results. Just like a BBQ wait for the flames to die down and it's ready. Then it keeps going for an hour or maybe a bit more, plenty of time. You can add more fuel just like a BBQ. Cooking food is a case of making really long skewers. Mine are 5mm steel, about 4 feet long, with a wooden file handle on one end and ground to a point at the other. Kebabs are a case of making your marinated kebab mix - look online for tandoori kebab recipes, marinated chicken, veg or whatever and threading it on the skewers. Then place the skewer upright in the tandoor. I use a spud at the bottom to stop the food falling down. Naans are much more fun. Make your dough - again look online for how - then shape it into flat naan shaped patties, slap them by hand onto the 400 degrees c inside of the tandoor. Then peel them off about a minute later when they're ready with a spatula and tongs. There's a knack to it, I dip my arm in cold water first, but it's pretty simple. I normally work my way round the tandoor, have 3 or 4 naans in the tandoor at once at different stages of cooking. The pot base does make a handy lid. It has a hole, and it seems to need it. The one thing that surprised me is that several online people who've built to this design have gone to extra lengths to get a copper cylinder. The copper is not essential to the design, I only used one cos I had one. An oil drum or brick pedestal does just as well. In the future I want to make a domed pizza oven.

A portable one built into a box trailer is needed for RR 08 hehe Matt No need, the standard model's portable enough. It fits nicely in the back of a Polo with the rear seat down. I didn't manage RR07, maybe I'll try to get to RRO8

If any of you do build you own, feel free to seek tech support along the way. When you've done it, if you put the details on your web sites, a link back to www.poptastic.com/tandoor.html would be appreciated, ta.
