where can i check the frame numbers to see if a bike is stolen ? as i don't want to ask at the police staition every time i get one  the reason i need to know is i had a brain wave  my 12yrs old nephew wants to learn about cars ( repair,paint ,etc ,etc) but my sister is not to keen on the idea till hes a bit older so i said why don't you let him learn on push bikes (thats how i started ;D) so at least then he can use whatever he builds himself plus he learns how things work  plus it will hopefully keep him out of trouble & it will be one less kid becoming a sc**te as he gets older (hopefully) now ive seen a few bikes on e-bay,dumped & various other places but the problem is i don't want him to get in trouble cos the bike is stolen & i don't want him to do a load of work & get told its stolen but then again i don't want to spend a load of money on a bike for him to strip,chop,weld,paint so any ideas  |

usually on the underside of the bottom bracket shell, they usually have a series of numbers stamped or machined into them

sound slike ur only option is to ask the police. i think ull be able to find cheap enough bikes without having to worry about where they came from, freecycle is good for free bikes

yeah i thought it would be it just seems daft that a lot of people don't have the frame numbers of there bikes somewhere as some of the bikes now cost nearly as much as cars (if not more ) |

thing is, even if you report a bike stolen, surely not many people have the frame number on record to give to the police?
plus, ive had some frames before that don't have numbers on them!

A big city centre Cop Shop that holds stolen bikes until reclaimed or whatever is worth a try to source free bikes.....
Might be trickier if you are not part of an organisation so maybe get a few of this lads mates involved and write a letter with the reasoning you gave above and statin' you only want knackered bikes to do mechanics on that are not worth anything at auction..
then if anyone asks where you got the bikes from you can state, " errr, well actually i got them from PC's T Wheeler and B Ryder at cop HQ"..... ;-))

There are no records kept anywhere of bike's frame numbers. iIt has been discussed in the trade for a while & some countries have done it & keep all bikes registered. So no way of telling I'm afraid. Try your local friendly bike shop-we often get asked if we buy old bikes, or they get given for breaking. Whereabouts are you? I can try & find something if you're in this neck of the woods

Why not just buy one you KNOW is stolen?  Seriously - most police forces offload stolen/recovered untracable equipment at dirt cheap prices, this includes bikes, cameras, computer networking gear, jewellery. I know BumbleBee Auctions is the main outlet for police stuff but I'm not sure all the forces participate in that particular scheme, some may do it themselves. If you know the bike is nicked, but have a recpeipt from the fuzz stating they have no further interest in it, you're guaranteed to be hassle-free. |
