this started life as a Suzuki GSX750ES... after winter corrosion killed it it got stripped.... it's slowly comin' back together but then i keep changin' my mind about things.... this is it so far.... going for a cafe racer look avec the help of suzuki gs500e front end and tank and gsx750f rear wheel... got to amalgamate orig tank ( red ) with the GS one and gonna cut the frame a bit more to slim the rear end down.....

my take on it is in the sixties, the original rockers used to race around on BSA's, Triumphs, Nortons etc and they used to race between points which were normally cafes such as the ace cafe in London. some of these ton up boys, as they become known, if they made the 100mph mark used to achieve this quest for speed by tunin engines, swappin bits from different bikes and by clippin' bars on to the forks to get the head down ar5e up in the air look.....
with this head down look and an extra bit of grecian2000 in the hair ( no helmets til '73 ) 100mph was more achievable...lol
a Triton combined a Triumph and Norton and i think i'm right in sayin' that the mighty GSXR Suzuki range based its frame on the Norton featherbed item makin' the original Gsxr the ultimate cafe racer of the eighties albeit with a fairin...

Indead, a triton is a truimph engine in a norton frame.
Cafe racers are old 50's/60's bikes built stripped down with ally tanks, single seats and drop bars to try and break the magical 100MPH, usualy on the north circular, at the ACE cafe, hence the name.

ah cool, i saw a triton at the weekend, i don't think it had an ally tank, unless it was painted of course, definately had click on bars tho.
its not really that much different from the slat flat style is it?

Cafe-racers don't necessarliy have to have aluminum tanks, the aluminium tanks came from the 5-gallon manx tanks designed for long races and the 3 1/2 gallon tanks used in shorter races. Whilst the hardcore modifier (with a few quid in his pockets) would use an aluminium tank, it was more common to see fibreglass tanks used, especially when companies caught on. Companies such as Dunstall and Rickman used to make fibreglass tanks and seats for racers and wannabe racers. Whilst the Triton has remained the most popular variation on the theme, due in no small part to the popularity of the donor models, there were also versions built using triumph engines in bsa frames (tribsa), triumph engines in enfield frames (trifield) and also tricati's. The ultimate of course would be the norvin, and thats what Ogri's bike is based on. Cafe-racers are supposed to go round corners, so are quite different from salt flat racers. Thats not to say people don't race them on the flats, I know of a guy racing a manx on the flats this year. Anyway...gsx looks to be coming along nicely, gonna be a stretch to the bars though

cheers phat..it's ok i'm blessed with the good looks of Clint Eastwood in his Spaghetti Western days but the body of Clyde in his..errrr, right turn days!!.. ;D, so a stretch to the bars should be no probs..... that and the fact that once its welded up the tank should have better proportions then when perched on the frame... the clip-ons that are on it worry me a bit...i don't know if i could ever trust 2 allen key bolts grabbin' the forks so might have to drill thru top yokes to put renthal type bars on it...don't really wanna have that type of handlebar so might have to start likin jota bars!!!...

Slight variation on the Triton: If you look at the bottom of the pic, you might just see the puddle spreading from my feet...

I grew up round the corner from the old Vincent factory site, there were always owners club meetings and rallies nearby, and they were the first classic bike I really got into. Nothing else even got close IMO.

Hey redgt2, I spotted that triumph a few days ago too. Sweet huh...building my SR500 motor at the moment for my flat tracker..gonna be a very quick single... Don't worry about the clip on clamps...They clamp the same way your forks are held in after all I've rn clip-ons a quite a few different bikes and they are fine.
