Well this is long overdue! I've been kicking around here for about three years now, in which time i've had several retro rides with a view to making them projects but for one reason or another they havn't got off the ground till now........ may I introduce.... Well there she is (hopefully) Bought in November from the 'bay for the princely sum of £150 with two months ticket and no tax. So I travelled up to Grimsby (from London) alone on the train. All usaual car buying rules were ignored as I had a one way ticket and was due at a stag do in manchester that night so I had to buy it regardless! Turned out to be better than I imagined so the deal was done and I set off to manchester without any problems as it drove great. Anyway christmas halted progress at this point and I didnt want to chuck money at it before getting a new ticket and a service (the first time i've ever indulged in such a luxury!) A few quid later and I had a years ticket, a new cam belt and in therory a half decent motah. Sadly I didnt get any decent pics before I cracked on with it but you get the general idea, there was a few rust spots and the arches looked a bit crusty but on introduction to mr grinder and his wire wheel I found that they werent too bad! Result! I even rolled(tw#tted) the arches in preperation for my RH/Mim raffinos/1900s (i cant seem to find the correct name - anyone?) in 15x7 et 15!! and the wheels! on the bm r.i.p! Plans are 60mm drop two tone satin black/silver a la slaters 505! (in perfect i've had my sills done style!) the mims - unsure on the colour scheme for them suggestions?? maybe a roof rack but we'll see also possibly de bumpered! PHOTOSHOPS GREATFULLY RECIEVED!! Ta John

Audi 80's are ace. A great base of a project. Just about anything that works on an E30 BMW or a Jetta of similar vintage will work on these.
Look forward to seeing this come together.

That's brilliant!! Really loving the smoothed out sides, this is pretty much how i wantded to go but as the bottom of both sets of doors were rusty among other tiny bits a bottom half spray job is in order and i don't think i have the skill to pull off a successfull match with 20 odd year old paint hence the two tone idea. Also liking the clear indicators, was gonna leave them standard, particularly as the only set of clears i've seen is 70 odd quid on german ebay!!!
cheers mate though looks ace! Fancy trying the two tone version??? or am i being too cheeky??

Ok, bit of an update! At last....... Well, bodywork done apart from paint, but i'm going to leave that until i can work out what i'm going to do with it! Hacked about the standard dash speaker locations in order to put in some JBL 3.5" speakers, and some matching 51/4" rears have gone in the rear shelf, so nice and subtle and hopefully reasonably decent. 60mm springs have arrived c/o German Ebay and are awaiting fitment as have the RH/Mims from my old e21 3 series which i'm pleased to say go on and don't appear to catch anywhere(fingers crossed!!!) So that's where we are at the mo, as i say paint is remaining ratty for now. I didnt intend to leave it like this but its growing on me! Anyway here are some pics, comments welcome...... 2 Wheels on my wagon! just about fits in the arch with 195/50/15s!!! (175s to follow!) And gratuitous i've got dish/fag packet pic! ta

Slam. That. Shit.
You gonna refurb those rims?

Yes, lol definately refurbing them! I think after 20 years of brake dust they could do with it. Not sure what colour though. Don't think i have the patients for the classic polished lip painted centre approach so i'm torn between gold (for that 80's pimp look) satin black, red or flouro orange/green! What do you reckon???

Right then, time for another update. Firstly i cracked on with the rims which proved to be an absolute pain in the and something i doubt i'll do again. Basically the wheels were corroded, filthy, baked in brake dust and generally awful. Firstly i tried wonder wheels in the vain hope it was mostly muck on them that was making them look so bad, no joy there. Then i tried various wire brushes in the drill which was very slow progress. THEN borrowed a sand blasting gun, but that didnt make much dent in it(possibly too soft sand/not enough pressure) then finally nitromores and more wire brush. Basically i think i got them more or less down to metal with a bit of paint as opposed to curse word and brake dust so shot them in primer and they don't look too bad. See for yourself

here are some more pics of the rims, think i'm going to go flouro orange for themin the end as that seems to be the fashion of the day Also after much umming and arring I decided to attempt to paint the sides in original zermatt silver. Like a lot of people I was apprehensive about undertaking a spray job with gun and compressor but I was pleasently surprised. Ok I did it outside and had a few runs early on (and greenflys who seem to thrive on 1k paint!) but it certainly gave me enough confidence to redo the panels I wasn't happy with (i was too desperate to apply the paint and didn't rub down some of the filler as well as I might). Ill probably have another go next weekend and sort out the imperfections and I reckon after that and a bit of a rub down and polish I should have a pretty satisfactory result for not very much money. By the way I borrowed the gun and the compressor is from work but the paint, laquer and thinners aswell as a few sundries only came to £60 and i'm sure i've seen worse cheap and cheerful blow overs from some bodyshops. Don't get me wrong it's pretty far from concourse but for a first go it certainly makes me wonder what could be achieved with a bit of practise, and somewhere indoors to paint! Anyway let me know what you think. Oh and by the way the rear is now lowered 60mm front should follow once ive done the paint By the way I only painted the doors, front wings and rear quarters, an if nothing else I'm well chuffed with the colour match from Auto Paint St Helens - very helpful to a novice and friendly too> Mark, the guy I spoke too was very reassuring and answered all my stupid questions without taking the p##s out of me even when i'd already ordered and paid for the wrong type of paint!! Cheers John

That's some nice work you've done there, these pre-face lift 80's seem to be popping up all over at the moment, wish I hadn't sold my £200 shitter now
