Hey all,
Just recently bought myself a 1981 957cc screamer ;D
Picked her up on Saturday after a 06:00 train to Paddington, tube to kings Cross, train to Cambridge, then Ely then March. Finally arrived at 13:00 with love in my eyes and a hole in my stomach...should've packed sandwiches.
Beautiful little car with real character [and not in the sense that every wing has filler to it's full depth and is held on with cable ties. Cheers Tom for keeping hold of her and passing on a spare dash, two sets of instrument panels, a spare pepperpot and all the other gumph!!
In testament to the little screamers passion for driving I then promptly tested her out with a 220mile drive straight down to Southend to pick up some track wheels for my Chevette, and then M25 North orbital and M4 to home...never skipped a beat and took a meagre sniff at £45 of fuel [less than I calculate the gf's '04 diesel clio makes, and a hell of a lot less than our clio sport]
Now she's back in home, sat to rest for the time being [see below for reason why] and needing some daily driving to get her going again.
I have decided to do the usual fluids, filters and fiddly little things before I start using it seriously as a daily. However, past picking up a manual for it I'm all out of ideas as to good places to deal with in the Bristol/Bath area. I'm all for a bit of spanner twirling so does anyone out there have some decent recommendations of people they've bought new/decent secondhand stuff off of in this area?
To start the ball rolling I've heard that Fiesta breakers in speedwell are worth a shout so I'll be heading there this afternoon.
Oh, and as it so happens a techincal query...
I appreciate the steering on these is almost elliptical [movement of the steering wheel around the column] but my wheel appears to push in towards the dash with relative ease [quite interesting when buzzing midway round a roundabout the wheel slides in towards the dash and the steering becomes very very VERY light.
I removed the cowl...mainly because it wasn't on at all well and kept fowling on the wheel with the glamoroud sound of plastic grating and flicking back on itself. But surely this can't be the only thing keeping the wheel out of the dash?
What's the cause for the steeing wheel movement...I guess it isn't supposed to happen to quite that extent...and how can I stop it, cowl going back on notwithstanding.
cheers,
morgs
Oh...and pics to follow now that the sun's come out and I'm in the mood to give it a clean!
