Knew there were a few wee scabby patches around the engine bay, so got the wire brush out to clean them up. Ended up with more bare metal than painted metal, but thankfully it was all sound. Found a tin of VHT black in the garage and figured what better stuff for engine bays? Looking better: Unbolted the driver's side driveshaft from the GTD engine/box combo, and fitted up the strut/hub/driveshaft assembly. These will get cleaned up properly eventually, right now I just want to get it all together and up and running. Then I'll start cleaning and detailing bits. Hubs and calipers are going to be bright orange to go with the look I have planned. At last, a turning point in the project - getting it back on all four wheels. It's amazing how much that spurs you on! Front grille mocked up: And a bonus shot showing how obvious it is that there's no engine in it!

First update in two months! :lmao: An extreme desire for a change was what got me stuck back into the grey mk2 and left this languishing. Some other stuff which I'll not go into contributed as well, but a PM from Mikey the other day got my enthusiasm fired back up, soooo... Dan can round and we got stuck in. Amazingly, the GTD has a different front crossmember, so first job: Is hauling out the old one. Dan got stuck into that, while I started making up brake lines: And yes, that is a new master cylinder! GTD crossmember in: And finished for the day: All the brake lines run, PAS pipes back on and in place, crossmember in and heatshield stuck on. Okay, so not a massive amount of progress, but it was only a few hours! Hopefully stick the engine in the hole today.

Did the engine actually get stuck in the hole that day? Errrr, no, did it hell. Life managed to exceptionally get in the way and the GTD languished outside the house a while longer. But no more. Well, one morning the sun decided to shine, and the big yellow Bonser fairy had dropped something in front of the GL: I threw a new cambelt on it since it made sense to, then left it for a day or so. Maybe longer, actually. I can be slack... After having a Jerry can in the rear of the S3 for long enough, I figured it was about time I actually put some diesel in it. So I did. But I'd need to drain the GL's tank first. Enter a breathing air cylinder with its contents compressed to somewhere in the region of 4000psi: Some suitable fittings saw the return to tank line being fed some compressed atmosphere and my GTI getting about 15 litres of god knows how old Tesco Value 72RON unleaded. It didn't like it much. The Bonser fairy returned with some chains and old seatbelts and did its lifting thing: And a few hours later driveshafts were connected; looms, gear linkages, throttle, speedo and clutch cables got the same treatment: The front panel goes on to see if the lights work: An early GTI grille completes the front end. And yes, the inner spots work, too! So, taking shape: Sadly, the GTD radiator was absolutely bollocksed - this I only found out after ordering a new bottom hose, topping up with water and a drop of G12 and running it for a good ten minutes. Oh yeah, didn't I mention? A quick cleaning up of the starter terminals, a fresh battery, a little patience waiting for the glow plug light to extinguish and she fired first turn of the key. Did you have any doubt?

Glad it's going down well, I've enjoyed building something a bit different! I believe the colour is Turkis Blue and it is rather gorgeous when the light hits it just right. I've already promised it back to the last but one owner who really regretted letting it go. It'll be going with everything required to re-standardise it, if that's even a word? I don't think he will, mind you... Price? I'm not letting it go for something as vulgar as money - I'm swapping it for a Corrado 16V.

Finally replaced the bust radiator yesterday and tightened up the alternator belt so it now charges and has a working rev counter! Just need to swap the clutch cable for a fresher one, fix the rear foglight and then it's MoT time... And yes, I know I'm slack with this project!

Slow? Slack more like. Can't wait to get it finished, but can't find the inspiration to get it finished in the first place. If that makes sense?

Nothing since last Christmas?
Is this still around or has the project been shelved?

Didn't think anyone cared anymore? Well, my mate got his storage back but wanted to use it to rebuild his two-door Jetta in. Did I fancy swapping the GTD back? Well, no, not really, but a man can only have so many projects. I'm needing a few tools, Dan, much of a discount do you get at *company he was leaving from in a month's time*? Turns out it was about 70%. So I gave him a list and we did a swap back. Everyone's happy. It's MoTd, taxed and on the road just'now - I shall dig out some pictures!
