Had a busy weekend making the most of the good weather. Was in the scrappies on friday and had something set aside for me so that I can strip it in its entirety, but I'm getting ahead of myself here... Saturday morning saw bright sun, little wind and the perfect opportunity to start preparing my new Golf for its engine conversion. Decided it would be easier lifting the engine out in one go this time - previously I've either taken it out in bits or dropped the whole front end as a complete unit. So I got stuck into removing the grille, front panel and radiator first. I think that was still full of its original coolant as it was brown and curse word stunk. With that out the way, it was much easier to get in about the bay and remove anything keeping the engine in! Cables and wiring harnesses were all disconnected and put to the side in readiness for the lift. As ever, my neighbour was on hand to help with lifting duties. Well, you didn't think we'd actually lift it out with some rope and brute force, did you? With the engine out of the way, this made it considerably easier to remove the entire wiring harness from the front end of the car. Leaving the front bumper on meant I had somewhere to sit down and do it, which is always good for relieving strain on the ol' back. Deciding that I couldn't be arsed with cutting my hands to ribbons fannying about behind the dash prompted the decision to remove it completely. Removed the brake servo at the same time, in order to make passing the engine loom out into the bay considerably easier. In all, it was much less fuss but I still ended up cutting my hands to ribbons! Wiring loom out and engine bay bare! Took the opportunity to drop the subframe at this point - I want to fit power steering and doing that on a bench is much easier. Need to clean up the subframe too as it's looking crusty. I may replace it but that depends on how good it is or otherwise. State of play at the end of yesterday: Over the course of the weekend I'd also kept busy by stripping out the last few bits and pieces from that old GTI that I cut up. And since we're heading into Aberdeen with a trailer this morning, thought it'd be as well full on the weigh in. See what I did there?

Anyways, took that old shell in to the scrap this morning and not long got back with another addition to my driveway. Again, it was a bit of a bargain. Had a look at it on friday afternoon so I knew it ran. It's an H-reg Golf GTD with a bit of a difference. Here's some pics of it next to the new project: One from the inside: But hang on, why's the rear section of loom curled up in the front like that? Is it because I've already started stripping it out for transplant? No. ;D

This is working out rather nicely isn't it ! I don't suppose you want to part with the original single lamp grille from it do you ? As my '86 has a 90 spec single lamp one on it and it looks pretty lame IMO.

i like the engine hoist you have! I made do in the end just to put a shop jack under the gearbox bellhousing and lift it while i pushed the car back. A brave move on my own really as it could have fallen etc

Glad it's being so well received! Anyways, tuesday saw some of this: Which meant progress wasn't going to be happening, really. So I pulled apart the driver's seat which I'd got with the GTD in an attempt to make the driver's seat in the GL height adjustable. Detrimming it was easy: Then I got bored and gave up. Yesterday was more productive. Got the dash out of the GTD so as to make stripping the loom out easier: Started removing all the stuff about the GTD's engine, too. All the plastic shielding, the intercooler, loom, etc... And started transplanting it into the GL: Gutted I'm going to be losing such low mileage clocks! But I guess it's not that important. Managed to get the GTD engine and bay looms fitted up into the GL and plugged into the CE2 fusebox but I'd lost the light by then! Found some annoying differences between the early and later shells, too. Nothing insurmountable, but I'm just miffed that I'm going to have to grind off the old expansion tank bracket to bolt on the new one!

Thanks! Errrm, maybe. Two different styles of wiring, so I'd doubted it...

I'm taking that as a compliment! ;D Not much more progress to report - just got the GL completely re-wired now and the diesel's almost ready to come out. Just need to disconnect driveshafts and loosen the engine mounts and it'll be good to go. Going to change the cambelt while it's out, too. Engine bay wiring sorted out, routed correctly and tied back: All looms connected back up to CE2 fusebox, ready for re-installing once the correct hanger's been put in: Getting there...

Small update! So far, I've found a few annoyances, but then when did any build ever go smoothly? First annoyance was the fusebox holder - different between CE1 and CE2 models. No problem, you'd imagine, just use the relevant holder with the relevant fusebox? Sure, but the bolt holes for hanging it up aren't in the same place! No matter, a bit of measuring, a bit of drilling and the new holder is hanging in place with the nice new CE2 fusebox in place: Second annoyance - the expansion tank brackets! Old one now removed: And I'll plug up the holes with some weld eventually. Or I might leave them in case anyone ever wants to turn this thing back to standard. Going to have to drill a couple more holes in the strut tower to fit this bracket: To take the later style spherical expansion tank. I'd have used the old one, except that would have meant twatting about with soldering new ends on the level sensor but that's academic because it would have twatted the intercooler anyway... The old wiring loom is now completely removed - and it fills one of those crates that you hide when the Tesco delivery comes, because they're so useful for storing stuff. A Golf wiring loom fits in one perfectly! The new one's routed correctly now, and the dash is kinda back in and now with speakers for the first time ever! Stereo loom is completely uncut and has nice ISO connectors, so all I need now is an old Blaupunkt to keep up with the look. The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed a subtle addition to the interior as well - the number 5 pool ball gearknob. Drilled it and tapped it to M12x1.75 pretty much as soon as it arrived in the post on saturday - big thanks to scaryoldcortina! ;D

Right, time for an update! Hauled the clocks apart so that the 'true' mileage showed. Basically I put the old speedo from the GL into the diesel clocks. Can't see why it wouldn't work? The remnants: Got the strut tops on both cars undone - the front springs on the GL were broken, and it's easier to drop the engine, 'box and subframe together. When I say drop, I actually mean lift the old half Golf up and over its old heart. Which finally allowed me to get at the servo, which is now in place in the engine bay of the GL. So I can get on with remaking brake lines now... Almost there now, might even have it finished before it's picked up and taken away!

Not been much progress with this, given that since we're moving it's sold pending collection, so have some pics taken at the scrappy. First cut is the deepest:

Finally got everything removed from that front half of that shell, so once I'd cut the brake lines I could lift it off: And dragged it out the way:

Okay, so as you've probably gathered by my incessant posting, we're not away yet and indeed aren't going and I've yet to find another job. So it's update time! Originally the plan was to drop the whole kit and caboodle out of the front of the GTD and bolt it back into the GL. A holed subframe put paid to that idea. No matter. Started cleaning up the GL's subframe and guess what? Yep, it's a mess, too. A quick rake around in my neighbour's shed - well, one of them - turned up a solid one with just a bit of surface rust. So got that into the garage and up on the bench, filled it with waxoyl and bolted up my PAS rack. The same fitting up technique was used as before to get the subframe onto the car - two tyres underneath with a scissor jack in the middle and lots of patience! Got the passenger's side strut back on along with the driveshaft although that fell into the gravel and needs cleaning up: Starting to look a bit complete again. It's not minty-mint despite its low miles, so I don't feel at all guilty about modifying it anymore. ;D Y'know how you get loyalty cards for shops, airlines, whatever? My scrappy does a loyalty scheme, too. It's called being bloody reasonably priced and throwing in the odd freebie: You'll never guess how much all that cost. :ok: The Passat cable shifter is for the other mk2, the badges, heater surround and switch and the 32 ECU relay are spares, the flippy handles are also going on the grey mk2 and the lights: Are growing on me, although they might just get chucked in a box.
