Ive had this one a while and ran it as was for about six months before taking it off the road for a bit of work. After staring at it for a while and having alot of different ideas of what to do with it the plan at the moment seems to be turning it into a stripped out hooligans tool! Its taking a bit of welding and bodywork and when i get motivation back I'll start on the rollcage (I'm a welder/fabricator) As for power, the plan now is a turbo'd zetec hooked to a pinto gearbox, not sure what rear end to use yet but I'm fairly certain the viva one wont cope I'll add some pics as I go and hopefully this will give me the kick in the ass i need to get on with it. Any thoughts, comments and advice appreciated Gray.

to be honest, despite what people will tell you, the stock 1256 axle will prob take it! they're stronger than people think, especially if you mig spec it! hsr axle will be damn hard to come by, you and your wallet would be better off finding an 1800/2300 magnum/firenza axle, straight swap and super strong!

like he says^^^^ a freind had a std 1256 axled one that he gave hell with a pinto.. I'm talking doughnuts everyday with spare tyres in the boot to get home! and it survived a chrysler 318 v8driven like it was stole only till a very big missfire that would cause wiplash! eventually broke it after months (read years) of abuse!! si btw great to see another viva on here.... better than a escort?!!! about time they went up in value!

END POVERTY NOW CHEAPER VIVAS actually yes i agree..... what i should have said was i wish they had the following/ease of spares and competition stuff that the escy's have got.... one day we might have a retro vauxhall magazine with vivas on the fron cover every other month and reams of adverts inside for bias pedal boxes and rose jointed adjustable everything...... yeah ok prob wont happen but would be nice to pick up parts as easily as our blue oval freinds?! si

Know what you mean but surely the lack of 'Off the shelf' performance parts makes uprating a viva MORE interesting! If you have a route that everyone follows to uprate a car then all the cars will end up very similar. Just look at Classic Ford Mag (yawn) Uprating a car that is not supported by the Performance Industry is a challenge and shows imagination. ;D

Ive discovered the aftermarket problems with the car, such as the wheelarches being shot, we discussed a few plans for this such as putting my trade to the test and remaking them in steel, second thought was changing the cars appearance slightly by cutting out the bad steel and grafting on the plastic arches from a mk11 golf! and thirdly which also I may add, is my personal favourite why not weld up the back doors once the cage is in, graft on some steel bubble arches intended for a mk1 escy and band out a set of original rostyles to suit the increased width? I reckon keeping the viva back end would be ideal but I had looked down the road of grafting a volvo axle in there, bullet proof, better brakes and I get to keep the same PCD making getting wheels an easier task. Front breaks will probably be Firenza/magnum components but if anyone knows a better setup i'd be pleased to hear about it. Apart from the engine set-up (my mate turbos zetecs but has never ventured outside FWD Fords so is looking forward to it ) I'm still very open minded on this one so all ideas etc add to the melting pot ;D Gray.

one day we might have a retro vauxhall magazine with vivas on the fron cover every other month We did. It was called Retro Cars..... You can't really make it out that well but this chappie who I had a bit crack with at Mallory grafted in some 'ordinary' wheelarches rather than fork out daft money for Viva ones.. And as far as the axle goes ,stick an OHC one in and I dare you to break it

Ford Arches?... Why not? ;D. Do it! I reckon the Volvo axle is a good bet as its supposed to be nice and strong. Another axle to consider is the Scimitar SE5 item. This is a Salisbury 4Ha axle similar to the Jag mk11 Item. It is the same width as the standard viva and a Jag Powerlok LSD plonks straight in Either axle will need 5 linking. The Scimitar axle is rather heavy though! Brakes. I used Renault 21 265mm vented discs redrilled and Mazda RX7 4 pot calipers. With a bit of angle grinding to the caliper and 10mm spacers these fit under a 13" wheel Hope this helps Cheers Chris
