What they definately don´t like are 16" wide wheels on the front with anything bigger than 205´s on them. They look great but don´t look surprised when the steering or bearings start playing up... this is true. also the the inner edge of the tyre will wear away at an alarming rate on an un lowered car. took me less than 3k to run my first set to the wire when i had the pentas on my old estate.

Took the Merc to the local garage for the first time this weekend. Very impressed although they do like to charge for their excellent service! Steering has been tweaked up a little and a fair bit of play was found in the upper LH balljoint. Interesting that the garage that did the service didn't find anything worrying here and indeed, the play is only visible if you lift the weight of the wheel off the suspension. That'll be getting replaced fairly soon then.
In other news, the recent deluge highlighted yet more water leaks. Front passenger footwell was so full of water that I knocked a couple of drain holes into the floor. I think one big project this year is going to be to remove both front and rear screens and fit new seals - dealing with the inevitable rust at the back at the same time.
Still love wafting around in it though, chip fat fumes wafting from the exhaust.

Have you cleared to drains under the bonnet? Just to the front of the bonnet spring, they get full of muck. Mine was also pretty rotten under the battery tray, take it out and have a look. If the bulkhead's holed you'll get water in there as well. Also, I adjusted my steering recently, I ended up winding the grubscrew out a good 5-6mm, I now have no play at the wheel and no binding!

Hi Nick. Oldbus has PMd me the same sort of thing and when I put the heater on this morning, the car misted up! Got water through the fresh air vents too so something is clearly not draining as it should. Have already found many blocked drain tubes (ie sunroof and around the engine bay) so not very surprising! I'll have a gander tonight. Thanks chaps!

Ar5eholes! My investigations this evening have uncovered a hole in the bulkhead. Quite displeasing! I'll get a photo up in a minute...

There you go. I'm not sure whether this was originally a drain hole or not - but pouring water down it certainly results in soggy floors! Carpets are out that side for the moment. Heater appears to be draining well enough - those "hosepipe" things seem clear.

Eek! I had a hole like that in my bulkhead. 4 years later when I finally get my ar$e in gear to fix it, it's turned into... ...this. Moral of the story? Fix small holes lest they turn into big holes! ;D

Will gaffer tape do? ;D
Oh well, if you will own old steel cars, I guess you've got to be prepared for things like this.

Had a quick look at this today. There is a vertical slit about four inches long in the bulkhead. Very crusty indeed. Smeared it with rust converter, for what it's worth, and applied structural gaffer tape to hopefully keep the water at bay until I can get someone to sort it out properly. Pants.

Oooh! Update time! Not much to report really. Fuelling issues have been sorted by the fitting of new fuel filters. Headlamps are still shocking and while I bought some more, the ebay seller didn't pack them very well and one broke in transit. Duh! Still arguing there. The fuel issues truck while towing. It does look like a nice outfit I think, but we're still going to sell the caravan as it just isn't used enough. Next boring update will involve fitting some new tyres to replace the crazy-paving sidewalled ones currently fitted.

They really do!
Quick query though for the Merc Mafia - I still need to replace the front window seals on both front doors. Where can I get them from and how easy are they to fit? Do you need to strip the door down and remove the glass? If so, might have to go back to the insulation tape bodge!

Mr DW, If and when I get my new wheels and if you are still looking for suitable rubber, you are more than welcome to have mine for beer tokens? They are only a couple of months and have covered very little mileage since fitting As for rubbers... speak to PC Matt, he has a contact on W123 spares/goodies!

Ah, would that be Ken?
Thanks for the rubber offer but they're looking pretty ropey so I think it'd be better to change them ASAP. Some more grip would be nice - the W123 does not like oversteering! The Volvo 740 estate I had was good fun to hang the tail out in, but the Merc just wobbles all over the place and feels awful. "Zis is not how you are meant to be driving!"

Try Euro Car Parts for rubbers, dude. Ken's stock of that kind of thing is, err, variable in quality.

Righty-ho! Am going to be in his neck of the woods at the weekend but doubt I'll have time for parts-gathering. I'll give ECP a go. Cheers.

Ar5e. It's rotten! Failed the MoT because of a crunchy sill - which soon started looking a lot worse once I started poking around inside. So much for solid sills then!
Looking to get it sorted ASAP but looks like I'll have to keep it a bit longer to justify the expenditure. Oh well. VW T4 plans will have to go on hold! Pics later. If I remember.
