Here is my Current "project". Its my first car which I got when I was 16. since then I have well replaced every thing! including the body shell. She currenty has a 1380cc engine, with all the normal turning bits, big cam, fancy crank, lighten flywheel etc. last ran on the rolling road at 120bhp at the fly! my target is to get to 138bhp so I have adding 1.5:1 rockers and building my own twin HIF38 carb set up. My daily drive is.... Which Hopfuly with abit of help will be a supercharged 1.8 MX5 but becuase buying a kit seems to easy ( really its course I have no money) I'm going to put the M45 charger from a new mini ( there fake minis) Right now on to my dear pass on cars.. This is my dutton which was ill fated and had a brake problem and time and money forced me to sell it. Did get it and MOT tho which was a task. And last my poor little mini turbo. It was the best bit of fun ever!! I almost bought it back but it went to a W**Ker who took it apart and I belive sold her in bits. The End. Thank you for your time.

love the last lil mini, propper "shed" mini lol 1380 looks very tidy apart from the gashmags lol not a fan, I'm one of those "it should be on 10s" mini people. As for carb setup, scrap it and strap a weber to it

At last you've joined! Took you long enough No mention of the 6 foot flames from the turbo the night we got it going, which almost made a taxi crash. Or the front arches flying off at high speed. Or the dutton boiling its brake fluid in seconds cos some silly sod with an escort routed the exhuast too close to the master cylinder...... Ah the fun days of Halfords and sheds, I do miss them

He seems to have discharged himself prematurely (so to speak) I know, it was a while back but I don`t know who was having a go at the time..... I was pretty fooked off at the time as it was a very un-Retro-rides thing to have happened, someone gave him a right slagging for something ? and he decided he`d had enough..... which is a fair loss to the forum

Nobody slagged him off.. I, and some other people, politely but firmly insisted that the power output claims he made for his engine were wildly incorrect. He obviously objected to this so much he left. Unfortunately the thread in question was deleted.

Based on what ? because it hasn`t been done before ?.... what do you base your "Wildy incorrect" statement on ? Do you know the car ? Have you seen it run ? Been there with it on the Dyno ? etc ..... Well done Not only have we lost a mental Mini, but also an easy and well sorted MX5 Supercharger set up (Designed and built by 2 engineers) for a lot less than a Jackson racing kit...... It`s not in the spirit of R-R to p1ss people off with unfounded opinions to the extent they don't want to come back

Hey, hey. He was asking for advice on further engine mods, so It was hardly unsolicited advice he was getting. He was asking for opinions on his future plans, and expecting impossible results.
He gave a very detailed list of mods and specs, all of them well-known off the shelf parts. The power he was claiming was impossible for those parts. He had an engine of a very common specification, and was claiming 120 horsepower when it was really 90 or so. He was flat out wrong, and it wasn't just me telling him so. His claim was simply mathematically impossible.
He was also expecting 138bhp from his engine after fitting twin carbs and high lift rockers.. That is the output of a mini miglia race engine, with split webbers, bigger valves, far better head, and revving almost 2000 rpm higher. Needless to say, 138bhp just wasn't going to happen. A reasonable estimate would have been roughly the 120 horse he thought he already had.
Nobody was calling him a liar.. Just telling him his rolling road results were a false indication of his actual power output. For him to leave the forum over that seems very thin-skinned to me.
He got some good advice on how to increase the power output, torque, and usability of his engine, and some good advice on how much salt to add to rolling road results, and how to avoid being caught out by extrapolated flywheel figures created using irrelevant coast down results and fuzzy maths.

I have a mini myself. Mk1. I must confess I havn't bothered putting a thread up for it due to the lack of progress on it. Minis are what I know best, so I DID try to help your friend and give him worthwhile advice.
I'm sorry your mate felt the way he did, but it wasn't through anyone being rude towards him. Asking for politeness is always okay, but asking people to not tell you the truth when you don't want to hear it is a bit much.
One of the last things he said was "I thought this place was different but I was wrong" or words to that effect. That made me think people had told him about that little gap between his extrapolated flywheel figures and reality before now, and he had got a bit touchy about the subject. As I said, it wasn't just me saying this stuff, infact it was pretty unanimous that he had unreliable figures. Perhaps he felt people were ganging up on him, but none of it was unkind, even though he did get a bit.. snippy about it.
I could have said nothing about this, but I felt the right thing to do was stick my neck out and tell you what happened, and admit to my involvement in it. I was very surprised when he left, it really did seem like such a minor thing to give up on the forum for. If you know him personally, get in touch with him and encourage him to return.
We can all be wrong. I have been wrong at least twice today. The important thing is to accept it happens and move on. I'm not fussed about the fact that there is no carbed 600cc fireblade, just happy to know more than I did when I woke up this morning. Okay, it is worse when we are wrong about something we held pride in.. Our pub bragging dyno figures, or whatever. That kind of stuff is more personal. If alex wants an apology for a perceived insult, he can have it. None was intended. But I can't change my view of his engine to please him.
