Hello all, just discovered this website so thought i'd post my build thread up, i have owned the car for nearly two years now, and have done mostly cosmetic/styling changes (for insurance puposes as i'm 20) but hopefully next year i will be upgrading the engine ;D
gutted to see i missed the NE region meet y'day (and it was only 10mins drive away from me)
posts copied from another forum, so stuff will be written in the wrong tense/dates etc
hi all, here are a few pictures of my project mk2 golf so far, its not going to be one of those massive detailed project posts that i love seeing personally because i haven't taken that many photo's during the course of the build. this has been my first project car, and my first dub, and have been doing a lot of the work myself, learning along the way.
so here it is as standard, bought for £500, roughly a year ago now, 1990 mk2 1600 driver with factory power steering. originally bought as a cheap run about to get another years no claims so that i could afford to insure a saxo vts! (after i crashed and sold my previous car a saxo vtr). oh how times change! it stayed standard for probably 6 months, apart from doing a few little bits, fitted a webber carb to replace the knackered pieburg, and replaced power steering pump. also did timing belt and a full service
and then i guess after driving the car for so long, and realising what great car's mk2 golf's are, and buying a few issues of PVW and seeing what could be done i decided iwas going to turn car into a full on project!
coilovers
rm's, rebuilt them with 1.5" dish and repainted centre's fitted with yoko 195/45/15's
also bought a set of big bumpers off ebay, and a cl style grille, as well some new lighting all round
then the back bumper i bought decided to break (snapped clips)
then i bought a tan leather interior and bought some ICE which was all installed by Bass Mechanix (custom stealth enclosure and custom kick well compnent build) but i don't have any pictures to hand.
here's a little picture of the interior, super rare factory tan leather, good nick for 20 years old 8)
and here is the custom made tdi style exhaust, done by triple x
so next up i decided was the paint, i was toying with idea of doing it myself, but after several attempts at doing bits of bodywork myself, i decided it was best left to a pro to try and get a really good job.
few photo's of her being pre-stripped
also notice new headlights in this photo!
the only unexpected suprise was a few patches of rust under the rear arch trims, where at some point in the cars life some muppet had put the trim back on with wood screw
so this is the state i left the car in 2 weeks ago at WMV coachworks in haltwhistle
i should be picking her up next weekend with a few subtle body mods and a fresh coat of alpine white  and the arches sorted out to accept my freshly widened wheels!
while the car was away i am rebuilding the wheels again, going to finish them off this week. this time to be 8" wide, using schmidt radinox stainless outers, and new badges. below is a photo of the mock up
hopefully should have her back next weekend, I can't wait to be honest! feel like a kid at christmas
the whole build isn't ground breaking, there's nothing that hasn't been done a million time before I'm sure, but instead of trying to be different just to make a point, I just built a car that I like. simple as.
little update - back from bodyshop, i'm very happy with the paint on the car, in fact its pretty perfect, and looks brand new again. the accident damage that was there has been repaired perfectly. still got a lot of assembly work to do, and loads of little bits and pieces to sort out, hopefully it should be fully finished by next weekend. a few taster pictures below of the work that was done, and should have some finished photo's soon!
havn't been working on the car for the last week or so, but last weekend i replaced the cracked windscreen, and this weekend i got all the door and window seals on. so today i went to get the tyres put back on the wheels and decided to put them on the car. the stance could still do with sorting, think it needs to go down another 40mm. also still got lots of finishing touches to do. this week i hope to take both the bumpers off, finish the front bumper with the splitters and fogs, and get them both to sit perfect. then the inside and outside need a good clean. the pictures:
at the moment the splitter is an i-pod nano off the deck, but i want it to be a credit card!!!
little update today. got the front bumper back together, using brand new OE Hella fog's
and here's my new rear plinth, i wasn't sure what to do with it. couldn't decide whether to keep the non-oe one, go back to standard or smooth out the standard one, then whether to colour code or leave textured. this i what i went for, was made for me by a lad called garry, (aka grry on edition 38), and i'm very happy with it. its the standard VAG plinth, with the lock hole smoothed out and sprayed in matt black so that it still looks like a standard textured plastic part.
couple of pics from section 5 meet
next up engine and brakes, few little changes to bodywork
