Nice one Charles, looks like you bagged a good un there. Not forgetting all the work you've obviously put into it to get it to where it is now. Respect. It looks almost identicle to my first bug, which was orange, i know yours is red, and i too had black wings all round, later changing to grey fronts and black rears?! I'll try and find some pics of it. In the meantime, stick with it looks like you are doing an ace job.

Thanks Magnum. Thats weird! My bug was originally Clementine Orange VW L20D I think. Unfortunately I couldn't get the enamel paint in a nice orange so I had to paint it red I hope to get it resprayed in Clementine eventually but it won't be worth it unless I get the heater channels and drivers side front quarter and rear quarters replaced which is off the budget scale at the moment!

I haven't managed to get much done to the car recently due to the weather and the fact I don't have a garage or much money but hopefully now with the days getting longer again and some funds gained from christmas things will start moving again!

Wow! Really really cool that! Some propa clever touches you've done to that, like the yacht paint, very interesting, does it repel water well? Ah that baby needs a shortened n dropped front beam with tiny tyres, n nice chunky rears with a bit of camber Phat mate. Phat

Here are some updated photos with the decals. The black numbers are magnetic so I can remove them from the roundels. And with the numbers: (I prefer it without) Recent work has included a new fuel tank and a clean up and paint of parts of the under bonnet area and also the fitment of two new running boards.

Update time! The bug now has taped headlights, some new numbers and checkered stripes along the pressing line in the roof. Plans for the new 1300 turbo mouse motor are also underway. ;D Stage one. - Blow through turbo system. * 4 into 1 Header. * Garret GT15 Turbocharger. * CB Maxi Oil Pump. * Stainless Inlet with rally design dump valve. * Stock 31Pict3 Carb. * Stock Fuel Pump * 009 Distributor locked out at 24? degrees. Modifications to stock parts: Fuel Pump The stock fuel pump can be boost referenced by adding a vacuum feed from the inlet pressure tube to the pump base which applies extra pressure to the diaphragm as boost increases and thus increases fuel pressure to suit making an electric fuel pump, boost sensitive regulator and return line unnecessary. Carburettor I've also converted the stock PICT carb by sealing the throttle spindles with 0 rings, soldering the lower holes of the emulsion tubes and enriching the idle air jet with a fine piece of wire. I've costed up the majority of the necessary parts and the whole set up should cost £500 tops due to the recycling of many stock parts. Stage 2 - Once this is up and running on my stock 1300TP I have plans for the engine itself which already has brand new heads, barrels and pistons etc. So i intend to refresh the bottom end, with a new or good used AS41 crankcase with the following internals: * Engle 100 camshaft - mild for use in conjunction with the turbo and reduced valve overlap compared to other cams maintaining low rev compression and therefore power. * CB Counterweighted 69mm crank. * CB Unitech con rods. * CB Straight cut cam gears. * Heavy duty cam followers. * Single heavy duty valve springs with chromoly retainers. * Bolt up rocker shafts. I know it seems a bit strange to want to base a performance engine around 1300TP but i'd like to do something a little different from the norm as a bit of a challenge which should work out quite a bit cheaper than a large capacity stroker engine and it would be a shame to waste my new 1300 top end building something bigger.

I'm seriously impressed with the work you've put into this, and the very cool styling choices - loving the chequered bit on the roof. It's refreshing to see small wheels and good english from a younger modifier too. Look forward to the next update.

I should be starting a proper body off restoration before two years have passed but I just want to enjoy it for the time being. Also thanks to Grizz for the encouraging words. Sorry I took so long to reply, I don't get on here much!

Latest photo: The door trim sits lower as the door is a replacement from an earlier model which had a slightly lower trim line. The car now sports original german Hella front indicators to replace the curse word quality plastic repros that were on before. As you can see i've almost finished a home made (butchered) roof rack which isn't looking too bad for something I've completed for free! I just need to mount some nice wooden slats to it and whack a steel jerry can and a spare wheel or two for a laugh. I might mount some spot lamps to the front of the 'rack too. I've also got my hands on some 5.5" deep dish steels to replace the 4.5's which will allow me to fit some more exciting tyres than the 155/80's. I'll have four of the wider wheels but i'm not sure whether to use them on all four corners or go for the fat and thin look with the skinny 4.5's left up front?

Well I haven't been on here for a while but i've done a number of things to the beetle. Firstly I painted the rear wheels and bolts to match the fronts, i've blended some of the old and new paintwork together with T Cut and 1500 grit too. Then I managed to get my hands on a nice period Bekowa roof rack which is now fitted and finally I added a nice 60's Porsche 912 tachometer to the dash which is now wired in and working nicely.

Hey there beetlecharles!
Just browsing through google and came across this thread for the first time. It's an amazing car you have there. Your modification goals and style is almost exactly the same as my car except that I started with a 1970 1500 single-port! Remarkable, it seems that we both got the cars at roughly the same time as well, however my budget has been even tighter than yours and so less work has taken place. I still love competing in it though!
Hopefully you are still on this forum and will check back here eventually. Any chance of an update? Keep up the good work!
