Got the tank in tonight, the modified Dodge Omni (distant cousin to the Talbot Sunbeam) tank straps worked like a charm. I put a bit of padding between the top of the tank and the body of the car, like stock, as well. Then I gave it all a spritz of beige rockerguard, and will finish up with a coat of white when I get some more . Started work on my modified sump too. I'll be taking 12mm out of it for a bit more ground clearance .

Not much to update, because I've slacked off on the pics as the weather begins to dip even further below 0*. Sorted out my CIS-E knock box harness and tacked up the modded sump. I need a torch to form the metal a bit before I finish the welding, and of course...I don't have one . I'm trying to unload a car that is taking up space in my driveway, to raise a bit of money to get my Scirocco rear beam blasted and powdercoated, but it's a slow process. More pics on the way soon!

Thanks for the kind words, but I must admit that the ideas I have for the car have changed quite a bit since I started reading/lurking RR.com . You guys all build the coolest cars, and if you can't find something pre-made (or even if you can), you build it yourselves anyway. I love the 'do-it-yourself' attitudes around here. If it works, drive it .

Looks tasty. You the same 'broke' who posts on club gti? Nope, I haven't registered there yet...although I've been sorely tempted lately. If the build quality of the cars there is any equal to the cars I've read about here...sign me up!

Managed a bit of chilly progress today, got the short oil pan finished-ish. I really should grind down the welds, but I'm not 100% satisfied with the pan so I'm not going to put any big work into it until I'm sure it will work. It's an oil pan anyway, it'll be under the car, so I can tolerate the lack of perfection (not that I'm a stickler for that anyway ). I have no idea how much capacity I've removed by doing this, but in the end...it doesn't matter much to me. This is not going to be a race car, and the oil cooler I will run will make up for the smaller pan. Note: It's really tough to work on the car when I've had to spend most of the day out on snow removal duty. Nearly a meter of snow has fallen in the past 8 hours. Every time I open my garage door, I have to shovel snow off my MkI :grr:

Not sure, really. I've seen a great many cars on the VWVortex that I really like, but no single one does it for me. My plan is a compilation of everything I've seen, plus a bit from RR.com . I've always wanted an externally mounted oil cooler, but never got around to it on my last MkI. I think this time, I'll do it . My ultimate goal is to have a car that I can be proud to drive, and is without (many) headaches . Thanks to RR.com, it's gotta be slammed, and on 13's.

Brilliant stuff, great build and glad to see you're protecting for the future - POR15 is your friend!! External oil cooler sounds interesting

FINALLY! Christmas is over, and I could splurge a bit. Got myself a heater! It's small...but works great. Next year when I insulate the garage (and put in a ceiling), it'll be toasty warm. I wish I could say I have some progress pics to put up of the MkI, but I have to attend to a dead wheel bearing on my daily driver Saturn .

FINALLY managed to get some more work done, thanks to my handy dandy home-made heat booth! The underside is finished (well, I'd love to have another can of the 3M undercoating, it's AMAZING), and I've started priming the underside of the bay, mainly for some rockerguard/rust paint protection. It got to 20* under that tarp, it was like summer!

Mr Heater? That from the same people who supplied Doc Brown's Mr Fusion, I wonder? ;D
And the progress is looking good, can't beat a nice clean floorpan for boosting morale!

I kinda wish it was the same folks...that heater would be cheaper to run . I'm unfortunately unable to keep buying POR-15, due to my budget, so where there is no rust, and good OEM paint (albeit in a hidden location), I'll use the old school stuff. I keep going overboard, and have to keep reminding myself that this car won't see winter ever again, so it's all overkill. Now, a new decision to make... Should I paint the engine bay a contrasting color, or a similar color to it's current beige hue? I am a big fan of contrasting colors in the bay, my jetta had a satin black one that I thought looked great, but I don't quite know what direction to go with this car. Here's my two choices: The top is a similar glossy beige to the bay, will be shinier with clearcoat, and the bottom is a flat brown (might go with the glossy version). Thoughts?
