Hi Dave, I will try and re-phrase what I meant.
You have a pipe, that flows air into the engine. The pipe is much longer than it should be. Because it is drawing air, it will have a slight vacuum in the pipe. If you can measure the vacuum at each end you can see how much restriction there is, if any.
I don't think you will really notice any though!

with all those hatches your gonna be able to do what my uncle used to do whilst he was in the forces, he drove a tank rescuer thing, (just a tank without the guns) he used to to but tins of beans etc on the engine til it cooked thru, ull easily be able to do that with this too. how about nicking a door seal off the donor car and using that for ur engine cover seal?? Funny you should mention that, was thinking about that too the other day. I have spent the odd hour (i mean year) or two in a 434 (workshop recovery APC)in the distant past, in fact my garage vice came off one! ;D In Canada we had petrol engined versions and they got so hot we could do a fry up on the exhausts outside even though it was minus 20 ;D Good idea with the door seal, you can´t quite see it in the photos but there´s a Scorpio door seal hanging up on one of the cupboards....unfortunately they´re the wrong profile but i´ll probably get away wiht using Capri ones ;D Hi Dave, I will try and re-phrase what I meant. If you're looking for some sort of sealing rubber for the floor panels check out the selection from Baines. I believe these are the manufacturers that supply a lot of the classic car trade. The full catalogue is on-line and you won't be short of choice! They do small orders too as I bought the chrome in-fill strip for the Sun-Tor window rubbers from them. They were very helpful and sent out a couple of samples so I could work out what would work best.

I have to say that I absolutely love this thread, your van and what you're doing with it... Every lunch time I sit at my desk in work eating my butties whilst looking through the progress pictures. It's inspirational, I'd never EVER contemplate such a mammoth task myself but watching this makes it all seem a lot more, well, realistic - it's fascinating to see the problems that arise and how you're getting around them.
Eleven out of Ten ;D

It's inspirational, I'd never EVER contemplate such a mammoth task myself but watching this makes it all seem a lot more, well, realistic - it's fascinating to see the problems that arise and how you're getting around them. Eleven out of Ten ;D thats exactly what i do every dinner time haha OB - i'll bring some bacon to a show or something if i know ull be there, engine oil flavoured bacon butties ftw!!

Eleven out of Ten ;D Thanks Darren, much appreciated...enjoy your lunch break (seems funny writing that at eight o´clock in the evening) ;D ;D We´ll be at the Pod on the 1st of June so you bring the bacon and i´ll get the engine warmed up Finished off the corner under the passengers seat. Used a bit of the original cowling cut to size... This fits in here quite nicely... Then played around with a bit of cardboard... and cut the plate out of abit of old supermarket shelving i had in the cellar... and gave the whole corner a once over with a paintbrush... looks nearly half decent now it´s all in one colour....will need more paint and some wax but i´ll do that later. Next up will be the passengers seat and seatbelt mounts... thanks for taking the time to stop by... ;D

popcorn time this thread. ;D ;D ;D Have you actually bought anything for this build yet?? everything seems to be made of stuff you've got knocking about haha, not that thats a bad at, I just found it funny. waste not want not I wish the misses would ask question like that... ;D Well to be honest i´ve bought some gas for the welder and loads of cutting discs for the angle grinder, the angle grinder is new too, and.......er new oil and filter, the airfilter and piping are new and that´s about it so far. I did pop over to the UK to pick up the Scorpio and that cost a few hundred quid but i visited grizz and got my english goodies shopping done which would normally have costed a bob or two but apart from that ..that´s it. Although the pics might give anther impression i don´t live in the garage but have two teenage lads and a wife to look after and feed. Mortgages arn´t cheap here either so i have to be very carefull what i spend my "disposable" money on, and apart from that i like reusing stuff and like most people on here i don´t throw anything away!!! ;DRipped all this lot out of the Scorpio and cut the mounts with the anglegrinder out so that i can weld them back into the van.......... The passengers B post started off like this... and after a bit of playing around it now looks like this... won´t bore you with the details, it´s just the same as the other side except i was quicker this time... With Friday and Monday being Bankholidays over here, and lousy weather being predicted all we´ve got on is my son has got a pool/billiard tournament on Friday but the rest of the weekend is mine, so hopefully i´ll be able to get some serious hours put into the van... ;D Thanks for all your input guys..it helps!!

Well before i got stuck into modifying the passengers seat i had to correct one of my earlier mistakes. I´d left the original seat bracket in which just wasn´t going to work with the new seat, as the corner sticks out too far... so chopped that off and welded in an extra bit to close up the gap... Now i could start on the seat. i´d already removed all the electric motors except the one for the back rest. I need to adjust the angle so chopped off the connector and hooked it up directly to a battery to get the angle right... To get the new hinges at the right height the seat frame needs modifying so out comes an old piece of angle iron... onto which i tacked half of the hinges to. Then with the seat in place.... i tacked in the other halves, removed the seat again and welded it all up properly... Well it may not be the prettiest solution but it works.... and with the seat back together and it all painted up you won´t be able to see it anyway... ;D So another job that i can cross off the "to do" list - fit passengers seat- finish engine cowl - refit propshaft & brakepipes - sort out coolant hosing - electrics - convert to 12V - modify MKII Golf headlights to fit - fit engine and gearbox oilcoolers - think up something clever for speedo, water temp and oil pressure gauges - paint the cabfloor and all the other bits i´ve fabricated - knock out dents and repaint the left hand side - fit two new front tyres - fit carpets and then put everything right that doesn´t work properly.... ;D

Managed to get a bit done yesterday evening... Painted up the passengers seat and got it all back together. Was going to chop off all the wiring but i´m not 100% sure i´ll be keeping the seats in the van. They look a bit too modern and i might end up putting them in the Capri so i stuck all the wiring out of the way and screwed it back together... As i didn´t have time to get really stuck in i thought i´d start to have a play around with all the hosing to see what i need to buy. First of all i gathered all the odds and sods i had. Its a mix of Mercedes, Ford FK and Ford Scorpio...... Did the easy stuff first. The top hose with Burton Thermoswitch adapter was good for a start... And then using a bit of power steering piping to lengthen the hosing a bit, the expansiontank was up next... I´ve got the original heater plumbed in and will sort the rest out once i´ve bought some hoses that´ll fit (or can be made to fit ;D)

I know what you mean about the seats Dave. They don't look quite right which seems a shame after the work to get them there!
Needs some simple, vinyl jobbies I reckon, but re-done in matching two-tone. Those vinyl seats in my H van were surprisingly comfortable - albeit black vinyl in the heat of Germany was a bad combination!
