Alright it's not retro it is however a kick ass bit of kit, specially for the price-of-a-night-out price tag I got it for. Plans aren't complicated. I've already de-catted it, got a subtle exhaust welded on the back, and gonna cut out the one remaining silencer this week. Hit it with the stick, fit the big ass intercooler i've got for it and wind up the boost. Then lug stuff about and tow my retros around with it, that should be good for about 190/200bhp. I've got a aero turbo set up waiting to be bolted up - will do that once i've got enough money for a proper re-map - then it should be running around 300bhp. Needs desperate twtting with the stick o truth.

Nice one - can't beat a SAAB 9000.
I picked up two Sunbeam Rapiers from Liecestershire (to Surrey) in a day with my old 2.3 9000. ;D

Love it. I thought about getting one of these, just before I bought the Jag. Seriously rapid and stealthy with it. ;D

Woooow, Carefull winding up the boost on a Saab the Gearboxes are chocolate with more power, particularly if its a 2.0 ecopower (low pressure turbo) as the gearbox is weaker still, My dad did exactly what you propose and had 2 gearbox rebuilds and 1 new gearbox before detuning it and selling it, another friend had a replacement gearbox fitted in his standard 2.3 turbo 900 on Friday just gone. I may be wrong and these may be isolated incidents (feel free to shoot me down) but my first hand experience is not good with the Saab gearboxes.

You see that's exactly the opposite of what i've heard/seen. My T16 900 is currently getting another box fitted because that went pop. But people seem to swear by the strength of the boxes on the 9000's. Oh well, if it goes pop it's a good excuse to find a 2.3hpt set up to fit ;D

Anyone tell me how these motors are mounted? T16 longitudinally? 9000 transverse? Was looking for donor for RWD - but coming up short on info for these to rwd. Great hacks though - comfortable and motorway munchers..... nice ride.

The classic 900's are mounted north-south, but they have an odd gearbox set up with the box underneath the engine. The normal mounted engines in 9000s (peachy lumps) I have been told several times mate up to vauxhall RWD boxes. However i've never confirmed that or seen anyone actually do that, ho hum.

been told similar - but again, no real lofe proof seen as yet. Into the valley of the shadow of custom bellhousing and all that! Good luck with the boost winding, hows the different turbo an easy upgrade to extra bhp - just a bigger unit?

Yeah it's a mitsubishi unit that's simply bigger, i think, they were used on the mentalist 9000 aero's so they can't be too shabby. I'm as new to saab tinkering as the next bloke. Will soon find out though ;D

Well the turbo is now the only silencer on it, it's not particularly loud and thankfully not chavvy. Now it just needs the boost-a-windin so it's got bite to match it's bark.

I almost went for it and got myself a 9000 a while back, wasn't sure which model to go for though, but the 2.0 turbo's etc could be picked up dirt cheap, the only expensive model was the 2.3 aero.
Be careful, 270 odd bhp is okay, 300 and apparently they start becoming less reliable, and far more expensive to hit, your best bet is aiming more like 270-280.
I only wish they were rwd, I mean HOW much fun would they be then?

Yeah exactly nb, the fwd'ness of it all is the only thing to let it down. I'll aim for somewhere around-about 270 280. But obviously for that i'll need an aero gearbox with lsd, which is not cheap, neither is the remap. So it'll stay at bodged boost for a bit methinks.

I wouldn't mind an aero - but for a start i'd have to junk the front seats. Also it would be a lot more difficult to insure than a modified lpt (i have checked on this point with my insurer). Also i wouldn't like the bother of everyone watching what i do with it 'because it's an aero'. This is a cooking model so no one'll care. Suspension i can get for peanuts from neo bros, engine - i'd be using the 2.0. Turbo i already have the mitsi unit and all the manifold from an aero, i don't like the aero kit or wheels and interior i can't fit in so in my mind doing it to a 2.0lpt makes perfek sense
;D

Got one niggly job out of the way, binning the standard rubbish velour interior and getting some nice leather in. It's such a simple job but so fugging fidly! Standard, tired velour Saab being tough old bar-stewards it sheared some of my smaller hex' so had to go to t'shop to get more with only my seat in, so tempted to leave it like that as it hauls so much ass without the interior 90's luxuray To make an omlette you gots to break some eggs, so the 17mm bit bought it, doing up the seatbelt mount, told you saabs were double 'ard. Next week go faster bits.

looks like a decent bit of kit, my mrs drives a 9000 CSE (well it's just come off the road to be sold) Watch out for the serpentine belt tensioner as they are very common to let go mine took out the timing cover when it went so that was £75 for secondhand timing cover £35 for new pullys £30 for a new belt and £90 for a new tensioner... plus about 10 hours work to sort them Mine has 17" alloys which make the car quite uncomfortable imho so I don't recommend them but they do look the nuts... I do love the heated leather seats tho and the climate control is uber powerfull... heres mine anyways

Well it did a good 300 miles towing a big ass brian james avec car on back without a grumble. I love this car.
Although really wish some spac-monkey hadn't cut all the tow bar wiring inside the boot and just gaffa taped it up. Took us a good hour in a freezing, dark halfords car park, in brum to get the damn things wired up again - and that's only temporary. Decided to give it some attention today and have a poke about the boost hoses - where I know there is a small leak. The vacuum hose coming off the diverter valve, going back to the inlet was perished and might as well had not been there, and a couple of other vacuum lines were less that useless. So got all that lot replaced (oooooh the strain of 30mins of work), in the process noticed one of the fuseboxes wasn't where it was supposed to be and was jamming against the throttle mechanism - losing a good 1" of travel on the trottle.
With those two done the bloody thing flies, the 50-70 time in 4th being awesome. Once I get my pay in a week it'll be treated to some 17's, lowness and a remap - good for 230bhp and 320+lb ft. Counting down the days.
