Well here's my latest project and one I will entirely blame Reanimation for if it all goes wrong
After selling the Porsche I was looking for something fun, and always wanted an MR2. Been looking at a few and cried at how they rust (924 was fully galvanized from new and never found any rust on it!) but eventually took a gamble and won this off ebay:
Goodish condition, obviously had some paint and some body work but not done too bad, rear arches have some filler but would be surpising if they didn't. Nearly a years MOT and an engine that sounds like bolt in a bean can being shaken really hard! I intended to go look before bidding to judge just how knackered the engine was but timing was against me so had to bid blind. Always fun on ebay eh, God knows what disasters will await ;D
Went to pay for it and it all looked ok. Apart from the engine seems like a good starting point and I love the interior:
In theory the only thing to sort is/was the engine, noise sounds quite low down on the engine so assume bottom end dead.
Other than a Celica ST162 when I was at Uni (head gasket went, head warped, went for spares) I've had nowt but Mercs, VW and Porsche since then so will make a change to get some experience on a Japanese car.
So today I went to go pick up from Hemel and drag back to Milton Keynes, had trusty towing bar thing and willing father.
All went well for about the first mile until the towing eye we were using ripped clean off at a junction. Damn! Dimly remember on these they have two eye that are welded to the bumper reinforer. Sadly the reinforced rots badly so not agreat design.
Add a new reinforcer to the list of parts required.
Fortunately I was able to use the other hook, so connected it up, only I noticed a drip drip noise whilst doing this. Look under car and realise the bar managed to poke a hole in the radiator.
Add a new radiator to the list of parts required.
Drove on a bit and noticed bumper was looking a bit 'off' in the rear mirror. Pulled over and discovered the bumper reinforcer is worse that I thought. The towing eye itself seems well fixed to the reinforcer but sadly the reinforcer isn't well fixed to the car, all but detaching, taking the bumper with it.
Add a new bumper to the list of parts required.
Luckily I had some ratchet straps in the car so had to strap around the bumper and the front member to tie them together. I'm now essentially towing an MR2 front bumper on a pole, that just happens to have the rest of an MR2 ratchett strapped to it!
Anyway eventually got it home and now have a front of car that looks like this:
Good eh?! Now wishing the car was front engined as I'll be taking out most of the front of the car anyway to sort bumper and radiator so would be far easier to work on engine.
Oh well. Off to sort some parts, then this weekend will try and squeeze into the garage and see how bad it all looks!
Still unsure on the wheels but least of my worries for now:
The offending towing eye:
The big ass exhaust, sounds fairly nice (when you car hear it over the engine death rattle):
