A wee while since I updated the progress on the car but things are still happening so here is where it is. Ceramic coated exhaust has arrived from the US so I am itching to have something to fit it too, how good does this look? So Saturday I went up to Beetlejacks who I swapped some stuff with and got me a type 3 engine to re-build. It also helps a lot that Jack has all the equipment for line boring casses, the know how to do it and the patience to put up with me for a day. This is what we dug out of his parents garden; It had been there a while but as we were splitting the case it was very saveable. About an hour lated and a lot of sticky screws (good old oxy-acetaline) we had this; A wee while lated the fan was coming off; And then after all this work and getting the case onto the engine stand disaster struck!!! There shouldnt really be a hole here All was not lost, luckily I had packed the engine I stripped the barrels and heads from incase we needed parts. Unfortunately due to previous bad machining this case was FUBARED as well. So Jack to the rescue, he had a ready line bored case that he was willing to part with but as its type 1 we need to drill the case for the dipstick/oil filler as this is in a different place and as it has been sitting I have brought it home to clean up. Back up nest week hopefully tomeasure what bearings it needs and put it together. In other news, still no seat covers but I have ordered a set of re-chromed bumpers (not cheap) as the old ones are doing my head in. Dave.

Quick update on how thing are progressing. I went back up to Jacks last night with the crankcase I will be using and measured up what bearings I need. These will be ordered up on Monday from GS&F. We also spent a bit of time converting the type 1 case for use in my type 3 engine. This involver removing the dipstick tube and tapping the hole for me to make a plug and drilling out the opening for the type 3 oil filler tube. Before; After; We also got the crank stripped ready for new shells;

Small update but full of setbacks annoyingly.
I got my seat covers through from TMI. The rear seat is the wrong model so I have started the front seats and done the base of the rear seat. I will post pics once I get the right covers and complete the job.
The carpets have had to go back, some of the seams have come appart so I had to rip them out and will be posting them back tomorrow.
I'm no further on with the engine but I have dropped all the tinware off for powder coating and with any luck I will have it back this week and will keep you posted.
So I'm a few steps backwards sadly and with getting Joannes beetle through the MOT I have had very little time to spend, hopefully I will have some good news to add to this thread soon.
Dave.

Cheers guys, I'm finding it hard to keep track of the thread myself as it dissapears so quickly. Time for another update. Things are happening a wee bit slower now but we are getting there. I went up to Jacks last Friday and we first assembled the crank; Then arranged everything back in the case before closing it up, making sure not to forget anything I hope to get the engine nearly complete for fitting next weekend but we will see as I am still short of a few parts, not least this core plug; And for a sneak preview, the front seats are finished and back in the car; I will do a full report when I eventualy get the correct rear seat from TMI. Dave.

Fantastic work Dave, I completely lost track of this too - it's turned out absolutely top notch... Pain in the Ass with the carpets n seats - but with the engine build ongoing it'll mean all those goodies to appreciate in one go! The last 5% is always the toughest - Good luck sorting the issues. She's looking a million dollars. Cool ride.

Cheers gtvsaviour, it is getting there, I just need to stop screwing up the easy jobs. I spent yesterday afternoon on the engine and took about 3 more steps backwards. I started with this; and all was going well. I got the studs in for the oil filler, cleaned up a set of head studs and had a brand new oil pump soaking on oil before fitting. Unfortunately by the end of the day the case was open again because of this; So that'll be the cam shaft shafted. My own fault but. I didnt know there were 2 depths of oil pump so I was bolting a deep pump onto a shallow cam shaft and destroyed the shaft AND the pump. Guess I will be down at GS&F Monday for new ones.

Cheers Samage, I think I'm back on track. I got my camshaft and 2'nd pump this afternoon from GS&F. All together the 2 pumps and new cam have cost me just under £100, expensive mistake. So with the new parts it meant I could re-assemble the case, fit the oil pump and threadlock the head studs in place. Going to continue the re-assembly through the week and hopefully run some tests on it by the weekend.

Cheers Keefy, hope you like the rest of the thread, its got quite long now so I hope you make it all the way through. Another 2 hours tinkering today sees the oil cooler on and cylinders 3 and 4 on with the head loosly bolted in place. I will torque the head studs once the other side is assembled as its supposed to be better to do them in matching pairs side to side so as not to stress the case. Dave.

Cheers Grizz. Couple more updates after the weekend. I got a wee bit of time spent on the engine over the weekend. With heads assembled and the engine sealed I filled it with some oil to chech for leaks. I fitted an old bell housing and a starter motor along with an oil pressure guage to see if I could get it primed and showing pressure. I couldnt get the guage to show pressure so after taking a bit of advice on VZi I decided it wasnt spinning fast enough on the starter and the only way to really test it is to go for it and finish assembly. It was spinning nice and freely so thats a good sign. So with a bit more time spent I got the nos heat exchangers I picked up cleaned, painted and wrapped in their jackets before fitting. I also made a phone call to a local trimmer recommended by one of my local club members. I am so fed up with it now being 7 weeks since I was sent the wrong back seat cover from Karmann Konnection and TMI (3 months since first order) and with no sign of resolution on their part I could no longer risk not having a back seat in time for show season. So Ricky the trimmer is away with the new cover and the old cover and will adapt the new cover to fit properly so hopefully the interior will be finished soon. I'm also still waiting for my bumpers. That will be 7 weeks this Friday since I was told they would be no longer than 3 weeks, talk about frustrating. Dave.

Its been a busy weekend on the car and starting to feel like I'm getting somewhere. I couldnt go any further until I found a rear mounting bar for the engine. The engine I stripped was from a swing axle car so had a different mount. Huge thanks to Mikelkca who came up trumps and not only found me a bar but dropped it off in Glasgow for me On Saturday I got work done on the engine. The fan housing and fan are on, took a while to get the fan centred but working now without rubbing. I also got the tins assembled around cylinders 3 and 4. Glad I got the tins coated now as I think it looks great. I got a call this morning from Ricky the trimmer to say my rear seat cover was done so today I have spent the afternoon finishing off my interior. Cover only cost £20 to have re-done so I'm well happy I gave him a call. Hope to get more done through the week, maybe get the engine finished off but I want to MOT the car before doing the engine swap so might do that through the week as well. Dave.

Cheers Coggers, there are bits I'm not happy with but nobody else has spotted them so I think I must just be over sensetive. More progress today. Tinware complete, dynamo on, carb linkage on, ballance pipe support on and then the bit that I have been looking forward to for months, exhaust on. I was going to wat and put the exhaust on once the engine was in the car incase I scratched the ceramic coating but I'm glad I did it now as it was a difficult fit and I snapped a stud off the head. It would have been a real pain if I had done that with it in the car. The car is going for an MOT at the end of the week and I'm thinking if the weather is good the swap will happen Sunday and Monday. I need to rob the carbs off the old engine but thats it so if it goes tits up it wont be too hard to swap back but I don't want to think about that. Dave.
