Our new daily driver and fun play thing, Suetonius! I have loads of pictures of the rebuild, which I will upload to a web gallery and post the link shortly, but for the time being here are the pictures from the viewing. Picked him up last night, didn't miss a beat. We have the roof so he can become a full hardtop, and also a roof rack.

I will make sure I keep this thread updated then to let you know how we get on with it as our 'daily' ;D
So far it looks like it will all even out pretty well - saving money on tax/insurance to pay for the extra fuel.
We took him on the motorway on the way back as it was the quickest way, and we did 60mph easily and comfortably - no problems at all.

I'm taking it its a petrol then LOL. I've been told the TD out of a Montego fits in pretty easily for better MPG and crusing ability.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Very nice. Just hope that you don't get knobbled by the VOSA undercover squad at LR shows etc. If you know what I mean.

I'm totally lost by that comment, Pog!
Yeah, it's a 2.5 Petrol (has an early defender engine in it).

Niiiiice wagon. Love these. Always fancied one, but having driven them early on in my career, I'm a bit more taken with the TDi 5's nowadays! What are the plans for it?

As you well know, the only ID on these landies up to about 1980 is the vin tag screwed to the dash. It is not uncommon for VOSA bods to look very carefully at Land Rovers, particularly at shows etc to catch out those claiming tax-exempt status for vehicles that are not eligible.

Sorry - I see where you are coming from now. (It's still too early - brain isn't in gear!)
It has been fully restored recently - where lots of parts have been changed.

It's a fine line TBH. The obvious 'discrepancies' are the dash and the front wings & panel. That 2.5 lump should make life more pleasant though My 2.25 (above) would do 60 at a push, but it wasn't fun for any length of time. 'Bout time I had another one really. Much fun.

Totally agree - trouble is that the panelling has been replaced on the dash, and looks like it was done to relocate the dash behind the wheel. The front panels where also replaced in the rebuild too - going on the rebuild pictures we have of him! The 2.5 is pretty nice, it pulls well, runs well and feels like a nice solid engine. Obviously the box is crunchy between 1&2 - but that's just part of the charm Must go find Hi-Lift jack now ;D

My old SWB 2a was great 'fun' It started out as a 3 Main Bearing 2.25 Petrol, which I killed on Salisbury plain, and was replaced by a near 0 mile 5 main bearing 2.25 Petrol.. which I believe is still going strong When it ran 6.00x16 tyres, I could pull away in fourth and it'd be flat out at 60, then I upgraded to some 7.50's and I'd only be able to pull away in third, but it'd do nearly 80 [LR anorak on] Your door hinges are not 2a ones either [LR anorak off]

That needs nothing.....drop some Supa Mud Pluggas on it, and enjoy some boonie-bashing!!
2.5 is a country mile better than the 2.25, the five-bearing crank makes it a lot smoother too (though post-'81 2.25's had that as well).
Make sure whoever swapped the dash put a LWB speedo in to go with the 7.50's. My old 2.5-powered S3 Lightweight had 7.50 SAT's on it, but the standard speedo read 15% slow as a result, I used to wonder why it only did 10mpg at an indicated 70 when I was actually doing 80ish. :-(
Ohh...and love the name. Someone else who saw 'Who Do You Think You Are' last week. ;D
