*Please skip to the end for the recent situation. The first bit is from 3yr ago.* Hi, I'm Steve. I'v been browsing this site for nearly a year but say little, so i'll call this an introduction. I have a VERY short car history. 1st car (in 2000) a 1989 pug 309 XL 1.3 in gold now off the road (engine getting tired) but still owned. 2nd car (in 2005) the most mundane of all cars EVER, a mk7 1996 Escort 1.3, bought cheap from salvage and put back on the road by leavering out the slam pannel with a jack and putting a new bonnet, bumper, light and wing on. I have done 'scrapyard maintenance' learning on the go on my own but thats about it skills wise. I just got another 309 off a friend (my 3rd car) when the MOT ran out, a '1986 309 GR Profile', another Simca 1.3 engine. I think this may now be in the borderline retro catagory so what shall I do with it? It should re-MOT ok no rust and all seems to work ok, I also have the other 309 for spares still. I'm not gonna chuck loads of money at it cos its not 'that' interesting but think it might be a good car to try a few things out on and its gotta be better than driving the escort and I do have some 309 love because of my 1st one. I'm thinking 'make this more interesting on the cheap then buy a project car to work on properly' I gathered that nugget from someone on here and it seemed to make scence. So here's the car, lets have some ideas.... Front Back Side My 1st car 'Gina-G-reg' (don't ask) Pressed rear plate (front has gone) 80's Stickertastic More Stickers yay..

I'd keep the stickers and to be honest tidy her up, shine up the bumpers, put some nice trims on and keep it standard, nice 309's are a rare sight these days.
I fancy a 1.9 GLD in red like we had a few off in the 90's, but I know insurance will be in the the stratosphere.
Keep us updated on it.

Nah, I would keep her standard, stock 309s are a old school fav of mine, I would not barry it up with making it look like something it isn't.
If you fancy the GTi flavor try restoring a 309GTi not many minters about of those, but I would not ruin a tidy standard example to mimic the 309 GTi favor.

Thanks for replies so far, i'll expand on the details of the cars (Good and Bad) as they both seem to have come off a little better than the reality in the pics I posted. The gold car BAD bits > 1) N/S wing dented (I had a little bump, oops) 2) O/S rear arch supermarket style bumps (Came with car) 3) 106k on engine felt tired and was getting noisy when retired 4) been sat for 2+ yrs 5) Disc's, tires and clutch link already used on the blue one. 6) O/S rear quarter has been replaced in past, paint now loosing lacquer and is rusting where welded in. 7) Had chassis legs (i think they're called) welded at last mot I put it through. 8) Rusting at top of windscreen The gold car GOOD bits > 1) My 1st car and Soooooo many memories. 2) 3 door has better shape 3) Gold paint and brown/tan interior he he The blue car BAD bits > 1) Paint isn't too good, lots of 'Granddad style' brush paint touch-ups and over-spray covering the entire car (IE not really shiny) 2) Brakes judder a little (new disc's needed) 3) 4 door shape not as good. 4) light Over-spray on ALL the lights, plastic rubbing strips and bumpers! The blue car Good bits > 1) 78k Engine sounds quiet (though exhaust blowing a little but can get that off the gold one) 2) Was in daily use till last month by a mate so know its been reliable in last 2 yrs. 2) No rust to speak of just a few little superficial scabs. 3) Interior not worn just needs a good clean 4) Some cool stickers 5) Pretty straight only a couple of small dents (the sort you have to catch in the light to see) This sort of over-spray is everywhere... Hard to photograph but the little brush paint touch-up repairs are on every panel (+ over-spray on headlight) Same sort of thing on the roof Rusty window runner and another sticker A couple of scabs like this should easy enough if seen to soon. Whoa! that turned into a bit more of a full breakdown than I intended. To summarize the blue one's in good shape but not minty enough to look special. The gold one is probably spares only now.

Some specific replies...
Elven - Its not nice enough as is to leave as is, but as you say I don't want to 'barry' it up which is always a risk if modding a 'newer' car like this!
Mrstigma - Style wise your damn right the gold one slammed would be my choice too but it requires quite a lot to get it up to scratch, probably too much? I'll think about it.
xbollox - Where you get your imagination from? I want some of what your on!
reanimation - I'm only doing ONE of these to be my daily driver because YES the escort IS that bad. Its not broken down on me or anything like that but the engine rattles and has NO power the steering doesn't feed back, the suspension wallows, the seats are uncomfortable; but worse still is its completely vacuous soul sapping lack of presence.
peester - Nice photoshop, I have always liked those alloys and loosing the arch gap really helps! The rear looks quite different cleaned, are the GTI lights all red then or was that a photoshop custom because I like them?
Padz - Well, matt black is always on the cards but not sure if its too bland a shape for it unless some additional touches can be added to get some interest back in? I'm trying to get some ideas.

Back lights are just me faffing because I like red'ed indicators.. so did that; then dark tinted the lot a bit too... (so red tint spray over indicators and reverse in real life- then black tint spray over the lot as well, after.) Best thing about the 'shop is removal of badges etc £0, those wheels and the lowering can't total much over £100-£200.. The red highlights wouldn't cost much either so; just did a bargain overhaul. Can try a matt black all-over; see how that looks...?

hey.
i know its been a long time since this thread was last posted in, but i thought id have my 2pence!
i do a bit of work on a similar car to yours, although its got the 1.0 simca engine in it.
it had been lowered and had gti wheels fitted to tidy it up a bit, an exhaust has been fitted to free up the breathing a little before it came to me.
now this is where my bit starts!
ive designed, fabricated and fitted a custom one off aluminium manifold to take a single weber 40. with this setup it seems to have freed up quite a few horses and it seems a lot nippier and revy!
the next step on the cards is for the flywheel to come off and be machined to make it lighter, this will help the acceleration a great deal!
then after that it will be coming back in for a camshaft regrind to give the valves a bit more lift on the standard profile, as afterall who wants a daily driver to be undrivable [like my 205 was!!]
the other route you could go is what ive done with my 309.
see my other posts!!

Thanks for explaining about the cars i still stand by my thoughts, they don't have to be perfect overnight, i'm still learning on the job and tidying my act along the way. with the Escort rid of it will be one less to worry about. Try press the one into action you think should be the best, and needs least work. Could have a couple of cool pugs on ya hands there.

I haven't gone away, I'm just biding my time. (really I'm here daily getting my fix)
All sense tells me the blue 4 door is the only viable one. I just hope one day I can post about making 'one off aluminium manifold' myself. In reality I'm trying to put a bathroom in my 1st house and then a kitchen next with no previous experience of either. (I managed to install my Central Heating OK though last yr after reading it up on the Net)
However I still like cars and experimenting with cutting springs or DIY paint jobs on this appeals, its a good enough car but if it goes wrong then its also pretty worthless to begin with.
Things I want to try so far are,
* Heat gunning the bumpers to black (had an experiment and looks promising) * Chopping the front springs (Find out what that involves, I've read the RR guide) * Lowering the back, I read about it somewhere but it confused me, so will have to re-read while comparing against the car. * Something with the paint?!>? >>Matt black maybe but is that too plain? other DIY alternatives and variants encouraged, I dunno what I could do just some realistic ideas I can try at home. (the only experience here is halfrauds rattle cans on the bonnet & wing of my escort, they look OK considering. I got the paint on even but didn't bother lacquering them so they got chipped quite a bit and were always a bit dull)
I think by now you know the score, I'm pretty handy generally but not experienced/skilled with cars at all!. I wanna have a go at some 'easy' stuff but don't want to go in blind.
Ideas in my head so far... 1) Matt/satin black with a thick 15cm stripe(?) up the side in contrasting gloss white... with a 5mm coach stripe top and bottom of it, if that makes sense. Paired with white Gti alloys or white Rallye steels. (worried this might look to racer/chav given the lowly engine)
2) Matt/satin black with a 3" stripe of 'builders' yellow bumble bee style tape up the side with a slogan of some sort in spray stencil 'Caution' style. (maybe 'CAUTION SLOW')
It sounds like i'm only considering matt black but not at all! I just don't know what could be done DIY style. ('Camo Paint' and the 'let it rust' style don't really appeal though I'm fairly open).

Ooh ooh ooh... Might have found a cheap 309 as a track day project kinda thing, it looks like an SR injection but details are a bit sketchy. Can you tell me, is the Gti suspension the same as lower models, or did I hear that the Gti has front wishbones while the lower spec models have TCAs? And do you know anything about the SR injection? From what I can tell, kind of a posh 205 1.6 Gti in drag...

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Hey mate. The 309SR Injection is exactly the same model as the GRi, apart from the older phase1 model [the GRi is phase2], what ive got, but I swapped the engine for turbo diesel! OK specs of an SRi: Suspension: same as the 205 1.6GTi, equivilent to 205 1.6GTi rear beam, the front suspension is the same as the 205 1.6GTi front setup: wishbones, anti-roll bar with link arms, however it has different front hubs. Base model 309's used TCA's! Brakes: same as the base models on the rear, drum brakes [as also the 2051.6GTi, the front brakes however are not the same as the 205 1.6GTi, it has nasty solid discs and a different front hub setup [the same as the 205 1. in memory serves right. It was usually fitted with the girling type caliper, but you can retro fit this with 205 1. bendix calipers then fit 106XSi front vented discs along the green stuff pads out of the back calipers of the 106GTi. Engine/Transmission: This is exactly the same as the 205 1.6GTi, 1580cc XU5JA engine with (supposidly) 115bhp (more like 102bhp in the real world!!), the transmission is usually a BE1, most SRi's are before they changed to the nicer BE3 box. Paintwork: came in a variety of colours, but usually white. Trim and extras: Externally the same as the base model 309, but usually with front fog lights, some had alloys, usually the 205 1.6GTi pepperpots, not the 205 1.9GTi/309GTi speedline wheels as pictured above! The inside trim was usually the same as the base models, but some times came with the sunroof. Hope this helps!

So it's been 3yrs sat on my drive as a non-runner. It wouldn't start so I couldn't move it and I was busy with other things so it just got put to the back of my mind. In fact I wasn't really thinking about it at all. Recently EVERYONE seems to have been hassling me about getting rid of the DEAD cars. I keep proclaiming that they just need some work and I'll get round to it sometime. Anyway I decided it was time to take stock and see whats what. Live or die I dint know, but I need to decide. First off I needed to know if I could get it running again. It had no spark and wouldn't draw any fuel through. Put a fresh battery on. Took the 3 plugs i could out (1 stuck tight) and cleaned and gapped them. Cleaned the HT leads and checked the distributor cap and arm. It would now start with a little fuel down the carb. Then got it running out of a jam jar which showed perished fuel lines (seeping/pulsing). Replaced the fuel lines and its now running from the tank fine. Great but rear drums had seized on. Took wheels off and clouted them and they freed up ok. Took it for a spin round the block and it seemed ok. I was quite upbeat about its fate now. So its been for and Failed its MOT. I'm not surprised but I don't know how I feel about it yet. Its not the worse fail list ever but it needs a bit more welding than I expected. I guess I need to go out with the knot wheel and come back with some pics. I have only been back from the MOT a hour so maybe I need some time to mull it over. Thanks for listening to my mumblings - Steve-
