The jag handbrake is known to be particularly weak, and a pain to set up well. Unfortunately I have just thrown away my copy of this months Jaguar Enthusiast as there was an article in it on how someone had improved the handbrake.
The gist of it was: - The stock pads are very small - the author got a set of (cheap) footbrake pads from another car and cut them down to fit the jag handbrake calipers, but with as big a swept area as possible. instead of using the 'T' bolts to location the pads he simply tapped the backing plate (which was 6mm rather than the jag pads 2mm) - The handbrake pads only pivot from one end, meaning they usually only touch the disc at the other end - using a tiny pad area. The author made up shims to fit between the caliper and pads, so that the pads were only a few thou away from the disc when the handbrake was off. The theory being that movement was so small pulling the handbrake on the pads stayed pretty much parallel to the disc. - The stock handbrake pads often come detached from the backing plate. When selecting alternative footbrake pads to cut down the author chose some that had better quality attachment - evidently some now come with a type of velcro style (hook/loop) fixing from the pad material to the metal backing
All this is obviously far easier whilst the brakes are in pieces rather than once together.
My own jag IRS rear end seems to get an MOT advisory on the handbrake effectiveness every year, so I'm contemplating doing some of the above - you may want to as well.

More wiring tonight, dashboard loom is now terminated with a 15 pin connector; What connectors are you using ? I'm putting a new loom in my MG Midget and need to join the front loom with the rear.

These ones connector They do 15 pin ones as well as lesser amounts. I like them as each pin can carry 15amps so capable of most circuits.

Thanks lozza Phil reported that the handbrake always worked really well? might be due to the Ford Anglia handbrake mechanism and it's only about 18" from the rear axle.

It would help that the Pop probably weighs less than half of a jag, my elan uses similar pads when adjusted properly they work fine.

Phil came over again today and has nearly sanded the complete body. I'n the meantime I have cleaned up all of the rear axle parts and rust treated all of the smaller items. The rear hubs now have new oil seals over the bearings and it seemed rude not to give then a once over on the polishing machine. I've started reassembling the driveshafts, unfortunately some of the powder coating on the centre shafts was very bad (it was all wrinkled up, lifted and very sharp) so had to be ground back to good metal again so it could be epoxy primed. 798.5 hours

I'd like to say we got a lot done today, but sadly there is not much to show for it. Our friend Rob came over and has taken all measurements to machine up an adaptor to fit the electronic speedo sensor to the gearbox, so that's a big job soon to be ticked off the list. We ended up having a long chat with him so progress was curtailed somewhat. I continued cleaning up the rear axle components and getting them epoxy primed; Phil has now just about finished colour sanding the car so as a little treat for him I polished a couple of areas to see how good his sanding is, it's not bad but there are some small scratches still so some extra sanding is still required. This is just the first polish with G3 with a hard & then a medium mop - we have not started on the fine polish or glaze yet - but it looks almost finished. I'm impressed with this paint. 801 hours.

As mentioned last night was a late one - 11.45 pm before I finished. Phil has carried on with the body sanding, going over areas where there were some micro scratches and continuing with the sanding with 2500 grit paper. It's all about ready for mopping now. In the meantime I have finished the switch panel surround and tweaked the panel a little for a tighter fit the the dashboard. Phil likes the black and wants to keep it.
Remade the temp panels with the holes in the right place, all fits well now so we are about there for the layout.
I then went on to painting the UJ's and brake parts for the rear axle, brush painting takes so much longer than spraying! no overspray though.

Something we need are two more of these. We think they are Gaz spring mounts/cups/collars? I'm sure they must be available but I cannot find them on the net anywhere, does anyone know where we should look?

Thanks - that could be it. I contacted Gaz last night & they replied at 6am this morning! We have Gaz & Avo on the rear end, but the collars on the AVO's are a lot thicker between the spring landing & the top collar so we only have 8.75" to fit the 9" spring. The Gaz ones are shallower so I need the same type - your link 'looks' correct but I'll need to find out the dimensions first.

I've had a couple of nights off as I've been so tired from work. Went to Wheelsday today for a chilled out day, my friend Gary had his std pop next to mine and together with Colin's fenderless one it made an interesting lineup. We got a few parts for Phils car including the speedo adaptor made by Rob at the show and I painted a few parts when I got home. New spring mounts are on their way from Gaz as well. 804.75 hours.

It was indeed Grizz. A good afternoons work today, I have bought a set of 3M polishes as several friends had highly recommended them over the Farecla products I currently have - and oh boy were they right! The Farecla stuff was almost finished - but it's now going in the bin as the 3M stuff knocks them out of the park. Not cheap, but much nicer to use and the results are excellent. The top part of the bulkhead and lower screen panel are now polished up; The rear roof section is only polished to the first stage here - but it looks good enough to be finished. I also painted a few parts for the rear axle, the front crossmember got finished as well;
Rear shocks are cleaned up and rust treated, they will get painted over the next couple of days.
No photos but the wires for the roof lining got rust treated as well, these will also get painted to stop any rust stains bleeding into the headlining.
810.75 hours.

The first drug company I interviewed for 31 years ago was them.

A good day today, took the pop out to a local meet for breakfast and a good chat with friends. Phil came round in the afternoon and we plumbed in the heater with a bit of clever plumbing by Phil. He then was tasked with doing a little more sanding along the roof behind the gutters and flatting down the bootlid. I assembled the last U/J's on to the driveshafts and masked up the shocks. As the weather was fantastic I managed to prime & topcoat them all in one day. Other parts that got primed & topcoated were the headlining wires, the bolt heads for the heater & the ends of the U/Js in the driveshafts. The last part of the day was the switch panel aluminium surround, all went well with the primer but I overdid the topcoat and it had a couple of runs it will need sanding down and doing again tomorrow. That will teach me to try to rush things. No photos today, but I'll post some tomorrow. 817 hours.
