Well I'm dissappointed the new spraygun did not turn me into a professional sprayer It's a Devilbiss FLG-5, it's not a top of the range gun but the pro's say it paints 90% as good as the Devilbiss GTi Pro which costs almost 4 times as much so they recommend it very highly for people like me who only paint for a hobby. I started by rubbing the primer filler back on the dashboard, it sands nice and easy and give a very smooth finish, but oh boy does it make a lot of dust!! Lots of sweeping up as I sanded but it still creates a lot of mess. I mixed up a small amount of paint just to see how the gun performs, I could not get a wide fan like the pro's on the videos but I think I need to thin the paint down a bit. I'm not used to this paint yet so I have not dialled in the best mix for it so far so a bit more experimentation will be needed to get the optimum results from both the paint & the gun. I painted the dashboard and used the remains of the paint to do one of the rear inner arches on the car. Dashboard looks pretty good (if you ignore the 4 runs in it ) its got a nice even finish without any orange peel, so with some practice with gun settings and getting the paint mix correct should yield excellent results. I've been using a bit of rocket in with the paint mix as it's a bit colder now, I'm impressed. The paint is touch dry by the time I've cleaned the gun out (about 15 mins). The Infra red heater helps as well but the inner rear arch was not under the lamp and that was where I tested it. 540.75 hours.

Not much to show for last nights work, I had sanded back the dashboard ready for a new coat of gloss and had also done a bit more sanding on the inside of the rear wings. I then put a new coat of epoxy primer on the inside of the rear wings as I was unhappy with the surface previously. Tonight I prepped a lot of small parts that needed gloss and set everything up to paint. The rear inner wings got the first coat of gloss as well as all the various small parts. Rear wings look like this so far; And the dashboard looks better but for some reason there are a few small bubbles in the paint in one area, not sure why but it will be getting another couple of coats to finish so I'll address those before that happens. 544.25 hours.

Bit cold to keep painting tonight, but looked over what I had painted last night. A couple of small runs on a couple of brackets and the dashboard bubbles had turned into some splits in the paint.
Hmmm...never had that before. I'm thinking it might be the rocket and the infra red heat lamp might have been too much and the paint has cured too fast in that area.
Dashboard is now rubbed down with 800 grit wet n dry and the splits have gone, so at least they were only surface splits rather than deep into the primer.
I'll see if I can get another coat on tomorrow - probably use my old gun as I have not really got a handle on the new one yet and I'll not use any rocket in the paint either.
544.75 hours.

How are you finding the epoxy is going off in the cold weather? I've got a couple of wheels to paint (mini 10" ones) and was wondering if it would set (I'm not worried about the finish they are for a trailer).

Kevins,
It's setting fine, I do try to warm the garage as much as possible but it's difficult to get it much over 12 degrees at the moment. I use my Infra red heater which cooks the panels nicely even in a cold garage.
Best bet is warm your rims in front of a fan heater before painting (or put by a radiator indoors for a few hours before) and then paint.
Stick a fan heater a few feet away blowing towards the rims for half an hour after painting and all will be well. You might get a few bits of curse word in the paint from the fan blowing it, but that's not such an issue with primer.

As I've previously mentioned I don't normally work on the car on Fridays but as I did very little last night I made an exception today. I used my cheapo gun again, it may be cheap but it does spray exceedingly well and I know what settings work well on it. I warmed the garage up for an hour then set about prepping all the panels for paint again. Rear wings are now finished on the inside and look nice & glossy in a ripply stonechip kind of way A few small parts were given a second coat, the battery tray brace and fuel tank sender cover shown here; and the dashboard is looking nice & glossy now 546 hours.

The pace at which you work every day does leave me feeling pretty guilty about my pace.
Paint is looking good so far.

Thanks for commenting Grizz, it's nice to get feedback. Phil came over today as I had a job for him he Scotchbrite'd the entire underside of the car to prep the gloss paint for the second coat, I didn't fancy that job, ha-ha! I did some research on the new spraygun - I read the instructions I now know how to set the gun up correctly, so we will see how that works later in this post. I checked the paint that I had sprayed yesterday, it all looked very nice and Phil loves the colour but it has not completely cured, it's dry but you can leave fingerprints in the paint if you press a finger on it. Even with the heaters on the temps at present are not hot enough for proper curing (I had no rocket in the batch of paint). Only one fix for that - all the panels are in the house next to radiators to get cooked for a couple of days Luckily Mrs Blackpop is not fazed by this, only asking why we had car parts in the living & dining room. Lesson learned, rocket will be added to all paint from now on until temps get warmer. After Phil had gone I did a bit of filler work on the inner bootlid edge to smooth it out for the boot seal to fit against. Then it was primer time, the front inner wings have their final coat of primer applied and should be ready for topcoat soon, one shown here, the other one looks the same, lol. After I had done that I mixed up a new batch of gloss (with a bit of rocket in it) to paint the inside of the front wings as well as a few small parts. With the gun set as recommended it was completely different. It now works like the pros show in the videos, a nice big fan with good coverage without dumping paint on too thick. I like it Front wings are now glossed with their first coat on the inside. One of the small parts was the removable towhook,
551 hours.

Glad to hear you’re happy with the new gun. You must be looking forward to all that lovely gloss to come. What brand of paint are you using? Is rocket that brand or just a generic product? I assume it’s an accelerator? I’ve never heard of it. What’s the temperature when you’re painting ? Good luck with it.

Hi Gazzam, I'm not sure of the brand as it's mixed by a paint supplier. Yes gloss is the reward for all the hard work . Rocket is a nickname for accelerator over here, so it's just basic 2K accelerator. At present the workshop is only getting up to about 12-13 degrees Celcius. Good news is I've been at the NSRA AGM today but when I got back all the paint that has been indoors all day today is now set properly. The paint I did in the garage yesterday with the rocket in it was all set properly last night.

Out for a curry last night and off to Paris this afternoon, but as I had a spare hour or so this morning it seemed a good time to get a bit more paint on. Annoyingly I ran out of paint just before I finished painting the last of the bootstrap brackets, I had 4 to do and only had enough paint for 3. So, front wings are fully glossed inside now; And the inner wings are in the first coat of gloss; Running out of space to put panels now it will be good when some are finished and Phil can take them home for safe storage. 552.5 hours.

Love the progress, but what's this "reading the instructions" shenanigans? Was it big changes to the settings or little changes having a big effect? Love the colour too

It was a completely different setup. Basically it's set with the fan 100% open before adjusting air pressure so I was using it at too low a pressure originally.

Looking good dude, and still fascinating to see the hours spent. Do you find that counting the hours makes you work faster as you know people will be seeing it? So are you spraying wholly with LVLP guns? I've been eyeing up a Sealey SSG501 for my new painting setup, but now I'm wondering whether a 2nd hand DeVilbiss might be a better option...

My JGA guns are not HVLP as they are older. My cheapo guns are all HVLP. The new Devilbiss is not HVLP but a different technology but it still uses less air. Its not that expensive either, look at sprayguns direct for prices. I got the 1.4mm tip.

About the hours, no not really. I work at my own speed, just interesting to see the hours it takes.

I've had a nice few days in Paris with Mrs Blackpop and we got back last night. Sooooo, back on to Phils car this afternoon. I was hoping to get a lot of painting done but I forgot just how much time prep work can take. The filler on the bootlid has been sanded back and the bootlid re-primed over the filled areas. The rear wings have also been sanded back and the inner wings sides are all masked up (which took ages as its difficult to mask concave areas) and these have also been primed in the first coat. I'll not mention that I put a bit too much thinners in the epoxy primer and that there are several runs in the paint...... Oh well, its only the first coat so it will need sanding anyway 556 hours.

Hi Mark, It’s good that you show us when you make errors, we don’t feel so bad with our own efforts. How do you get inspired to put on the overalls and go out to a cold garage. Is it the fact it’s not your car and you want it finished and out of the garage. I can’t get inspired to get the overalls on and go out to the freezing garage. My joints are stiff and painful but free up a bit once i get going. Keep at it and thanks for the guidance and tips, looking forward to the next update, Norman

Hi Norman. Yes I often make errors, happily not major ones.
Garage is usually warm after a few minutes - 10-12Kw of heaters will achieve that, does not do my electric bill a lot of good though! lol. I'm champing at the bit to do the gloss work but there is a lot of prep work needed to get to that stage still. I just really enjoy working on cars really so normally it's fairly easy to get the overalls on.

Phil popped over tonight with a friend (another Mark) who also owns a Pop. Mark wanted to see the progress and Phil was dropping off a heater for me and had a look at a nice Art Deco interior lamp I have found for him for the car. We had a good chinwag for a while so I started on the car a lot later than normal. I was going to rub down the rear wings and re-prime them, but although the primer is dry it's still a bit soft for sanding - especially where the runs are. Wings are now in the house next to the radiators, so the paint should be cured properly by tomorrow night. As such I only did a little bit in the end - I brush painted the fuel tank in black gloss. It's next to the heater and I added a bit of rocket so this should be cured properly tomorrow. It needs a second coat to get a shine to it as it's on the stonechip. 557 hours.
