I've not posted much lately as life has turned to 5hit recently - coming out the other side of it now so starting to get a more positive mental attitude again. One of my cars caught fire - very close to losing it, so I know how scary that can be.

A fire extinguisher is an excellent addition to any car, but there's no point having one if it isn't immediately accessible. I usually make a K-shaped bracket that fits under the front of the seat runners, so that if I need it it's in my hand when I get out of the car.

It's funny, one of our friends that day who also has a pop has 2 fitted to the roll cage. I saw them and thought to myself - I really must get around to fitting one in mine - premonition?? I'm looking at the Firestick - seems a good option - anyone have any thoughts on them? Firestick |

I don't think the FSS is FIA approved so I can't use them but they seem to be popular where the reggos don't exclude them. 15 year life is very attractive so you don't have to replace every 3/5 years.

I put my last one out with a powder extinguisher and it made a right mess even though I was able to hose the car down immediately. I carry a small CO2 extinguisher under the passenger seat so I can just chuff a small fire out without wrecking everything. If you go that route though, I recommend getting one with a pressure gauge so you know what's left in it.

Like you Jonny I don't fancy the powder. CO2 is not recommended for cars though?
I prefer it as it works and leaves no mess.
That's why I quite like the firestick, as it lasts 50 seconds for the short time one and leaves no residue.
As Ian says, 15 year lifespan is good too.

After my scare, I put one of those in each of my cars. No mess is one factor, but the time they work for is the main thing.
I used a 1 kg powder extinguisher and they go for a very short time - probably less than 10 seconds, so you want to make sure they’re pointed the right way!
So now I have a stick in each car. A bag containing 3 powder ones, along with a small toolkit goes in whatever car I’m taking. Hopefully that’s enough insurance!

As others have said a handy fire extinguisher is very useful! I have managed to have three "experiences" (in 50+ years) with petrol fires in garages.....fortunately with fire extinguishers and not too much damage.
Hope your work/life problems are getting sorted.

Thanks Phil, work situation is mostly resolved now so a lot better. A bit quiet at work this week so did a bit of cad work and programmed these into the cnc machine.  Which turned into these;  These are prototypes and will fit here;  Phil dropped a lot of thin plywood around so I've started making the interior panels. Drivers door started here;  And completed - needs waterproofing on the back and then the trim obviously.  Almost a shame to cover up the painted insides.  The trim clips locate in these plastic retainers - saves scraping the paint off the metal when they are fitted.  A veery useful tool for getting the trim clips in the right place are these little pointed spigots that fit into the clip retainers. They leave an indent in the panel and the clip holes are drilled 11mm offset to them.  |
