You have no idea how small these cars are especially when you shove a huge V8 in them A fact my morris reminds me of each time I do anything to it. And they were for a family of 4. Modern cars are blue whales in comparison. Even the smallest of them. Looking good. Can't wait to see it sail through the iva. All pointers for me.

Yes, to give an idea. Seats are only 19" wide at widest point, they have 1/4" from them to the roll cage and about 1" in between them. Roll cage is about 3/4" from the B posts. So car is only 44" wide inside, get a tape measure and see how small that is!!

Just measured the double seat in the front of my VW van, that's about 33" But of course that seat is just for people to sit, not do anything else, such as move their arms and legs! The drivers side is 28" on its own..... i will try not to take for granted all the space I have (when you get 3 adults across the front, it feels very cramped even in the drivers seat!) Great work still!!

Another little job done tonight, carving ally parts for the lower door hinges. Which go here; top ones are not necessary but I kind of like the extra smooth look they give. Yes that is a big chip in the paint it's where the door got caught on the trailer and bent back too far, another job to do The ball of fail shows these now pass the radius requirements.

Could you have wrapped the whole car in bubble wrap for the test ?

Hi could you show a pic of ball of fail failing the hinge for comparison please. Hats off to you and your dedication, well done. Dan

Dan, Wherever the Ball of fail meets any projection of over 5mm or more the edge must be a minimum radius of 2.5mm. If projection is under 5mm then any edges must be blunted. If the edge of the ball cannot touch it then it can be razor blade sharp (possibly) lol. Bubble wrap, pipe lagging etc used to be acceptable until the Cobra boys wrapped just about everything in it, it then got banned

Bit more done, all my wiring goes in the roof, and also the headlining spars. The fixings for both are again too sharp - not too sure how you would actually cut youself on them! but they have to be covered. I want a headlining fitted which would hide all the sharp edges but its not practical to get it done yet. So some lateral thinking was done and I've come up with this bodge - I mean fix I might even trim them as it may be a while before a proper headlining gets done otherwise they will get done in grey primer. Another sharp edge either side of rear window; So more panels were made & trimmed - no more sharp edges

I'm amazed at some of the nonsense that has to go on to jump through the hoops for IVA tests But, I'm very pleased you are going through all this aggro and showing us all the solutions you have come up with I read through the whole build thread the last few weeks (on and off) and the attention to detail on the whole build has been amazing to my eyes I hope the tester appreciates the amount of faff that has gone in to getting the pop up to testing standards

Cheers, I hope so too! List is pretty small now so hopefully I can apply for the test soon.

Woo hoo. You deserve the recognition you will get for this when it's out there. The more people that build to the rules the more respect our hobby/lifestyle will get.
Your an inspiration.

I am 100% sure my modern has more sharp edges on one panel than your entire car has.
Stupid rules but great to see what work needs to happen.

To be fair the rules are not stupid - where they fail is they were not written with modified old cars in mind. If building a 'new' car its easy to comply with what then need - but trying to get a 60 year old design to pass is very difficult.
All the rules ask for is that all shapes cause as little injury to pedestrians/occupants as possible in the event of an accident which is fair enough really.
The rest of the rules concentrate on safety in terms of seatbelts, lights, being able to see clearly etc.

For me it seems absurd that the rear screen area and the roof panels inside need to be covered so there is no sharp edges, like they are going to be within easy reach from the driving position Is it still the same conditions for switches behind the steering wheel can be different to the ones within reach that aren't behind it?

@0 years from now, when the Western World is looking around and wondering why we have no people who can do anything with their hands or their imagination, I will point them to this thread about how bureaucracy killed innovation.
I don't know if you have seen this video, but it speaks to something that society has been breeding out of our kids for a few generations as we transition to couch planted rutabagas.

Yes, behind and to a radius of 127mm beyond the perimiter of the wheel (except below it) switches can stick out and be more pointy as they are all exempt. If you can get all of your 'period' switches in this area then they are exempt.

Not sure I agree- surely it's finding solutions to challenging problems that drives innovation? Without all the red tape it would be too easy... I'm an industrial designer, and we are currently recruiting at work. In a couple of weeks time I'm going to the degree show at my old uni where the industrial design course will have over 100 graduates work on display, I can't wait to chat to some very talented 21 year olds!

Sorry... But to mandate that a 60 year old body has to fit these modern rules is truly bizarre to me.
What, in real world terms, are the chances a pedestrian is going to get hurt on the doorhinge of this particular Anglia, and if they do, what does it matter that it has a different engine in it ( I'm guessing that is the reason the car is made to go through this ) Or having to replace perfectly good glass ( specially on later cars where this will be really expensive )
The fact that the builder of this car likes a good challenge makes for great reading, and I'd love to see him win. But there shouldn't have to be a need for this...

I can only presume that with so much of the structure and running gear changed, the DVLA / POWERS that be see it as a one off custom special, almost like a kitcar?

Whether you believe you can, or you cannot, you're probably right.
