After looking round for a while for a car to hopefully take on next years Scumball Rally I bought this for 600quid: Its been standing for 3 years but got it started and running on all 8 at the weekend. Condition is best described as "tired". It has the 5 litre small block chevy V8 and a manual 5 speed box. It needs a new clutch (already here from the USA for the pricely sum of £36!) a tune up and a new alternator. I have the original wheels for it but 2 have been curbed so might just keep the chrome steelies on. As Scumball cars have to be worth less then a grand I'm not planning any serious mods - until after the event anyway. Anyone who has a fuel tanker and wants to come on the 2008 Scumball as a support vehicle is welcome.

Not sure if I am going to keep it after the Scumball yet.
I think the manual box is more common on the Trans Am then on the Firebird from around this time, but I stand to be corrected.

Awesome machine! And bargain money too! ;D But I implore you not to make it a KITT replica should the thought ever cross your mind, it's rapidly getting as tired as Del Boy Reliants, Herbie Beetles and Italian Job Minis!

Don't worry - I've no intention of turning it into a KITT replica.
Will keep it black though but might put on some racing stripes (I have a strange yearning for orange ones for some reason).

Hmm, A friend of mine bought one of those as his first foray onto older cars about 6 years ago. He was a bit of a Knight Rider fan and when he discovered how cheaply they could be got he went looking for one. He didn't take my advice and bought what seemed to be a bit of a shed and had no end of trouble. Ended up almost giving it away to his "mechanic" who seemed responsible for curse word-ing it up even further. He decided old cars weren't for him thanks to that wrong move So, out of interest where did it come from as I knew my friends one ended up sat for quite a long time....

Hold on, you can buy Knight Rider for £600? Like a real one rather than a radio controlled one?

The 305 should be a relatively economical beastie if it's in good tune and health - especially with ze manual box!

Its got a Edelbrock inlet manifold and a 4 barrel Holley carb on it. The previous owner reckoned he could get 20mpg if it was driven carefully. Most people I've spoke to say about 15mpg though. Picked this one up from just outside Swindon. I'm an ex automotive engineer and my Dad is a Mechanic who used to work on yanky motors alot, so I'm pretty confident that this one is a goodun. Anyway bits are so cheap (even when you factor in postage) e.g set of front brake pads $10.37, set of rear brake shoes $15.93, Oil filter $1.50. I ordered almost all the bits I need including the full clutch kit (pressure plate, friction plate, thrust and pilot bearings and an alignment tool) and the total including postage was $317.40, ordered on Sunday arrived on Thursday! The cheapest I'd been quoted for the clutch kit alone in the UK was £188 +VAT + postage. I used: www.rockauto.com

Should get more than 15 MPG. I get 15 MPG from a 7 litre 2.2 ton Oldsmobile, driven hard enough to grenade the transmission...

I used to get at least 20mpg with my old 68 Charger, that had a mild 318 (5.2) with a 600 vac sec Holley on, stock 3 speed auto.

Cheers both. That's good news - looks like he wasn't bullshitting about the 20mpg then.
Had another ordering fest today and a new alternator is on its way from the US.

Yeah, 20mpg would sound reasonable - I get 13ish mpg on a run from my 2+ ton 6.6 litre 4wd Chevy!

Now got a blog up and running to keep everyone up to date on our Scumball progress and tart for sponsorship. pontikak.blogspot.com/We are looking for company sponsors, as the car is so unusual it sure to get a lot of attention! So if you want your company name on the side get in touch either through here or the blog. 100% of all money donated either by individuals or company sponsors goes to The Perthes Association. All entry fees, fuel and other expenses are coming out of me and my co-drivers pocket.
