Well Last year i decided i wanted another beetle, so i bought this one for the price of £500, It was solid, had most of the parts to finish less an engine so i grabbed it ;D It came converted to all early panels , including a long bonnet, fiberglass "W" deck lid with race pins, the front lowered, disc brakes, one piece windows and a few other cool bits.
A few tins of paint and some trim and it started to look good........
Now whilst poking around i discovered something rather cool, my 68 was originally a semi-auto meaning it had an IRS rear rather than swing axle!! so seeing as i need an engine i thought I'd find a 1302/03 and nab the gearbox to ;D
A search on ebey found me a nice custom 1303 that was rotten but had tax and MOT near me so i went to see it.......
Inside i found a twin carb engine which ran sweet as and had no end float, £450? thank you sir i'll take it!!!
So out of the donor came the following:
Engine 1641 TC with high lft cam
gearbox
steering wheel
flat 4 shifter
centerline wheels with 4 newish tyres.
All that got put in and "Stanley" and the rear dropped 2 splines and he started to look like this.....
So far the project cost me £950, the alloys didn't fit (the front rubbed on the arches) but i was given some stock steels so on went some 175/65/15 rear and 135 smart car tyres on the front. after selling various parts i did need my £950 investment came down to about £600 and he was now looking more like this....
Now the interior, it was always my intention to strip him out and make the most of the 75ish BHP i had so some ally panels i made years ago were fitted to the doors and dash, some old GTE seat welded to the runners and EVERYTHING that wasn't need taken out.....
In the end my Stan looked very tough and cost me around £700 and 6 weeks of evenings and weekends to build,
After a 3 months of bombing about in him, i decided he had to go so i could sort the Starion out and i was tired of being defend and cold all the time.
Built for £700ish sold for £1400 and finally the sad day he left...
