My Triumph Herald 13/60 convertible. Apologies for the photo’s - I only had some non digital ones and no scanner so I had to photograph them.
I inherited the car from my late brother in 1988 and it lay around for a good few years before I even got started on it and even then it was fitted in around anything else that was on the go which is why it was 1999 before it went back on the road.
A complete strip down revealed a completely knackered chassis so a new chassis was obtained from Chick Doig in Kirkcaldy. The chassis actually has at least 10 coats of paint on it and was fully waxoyled.
The body took a lot of welding as the floor was totally shot and once finished was treated to an excessive amount of paint/underseal - shouldn’t ever rust again! (hopefully).
The respray was done in Teal Blue - it’s not an original Herald colour but I liked it. The red Hood was with the car and looks ok with the blue paintwork. The seats are almost knackered but I reused them anyway - I’ll get round to changing them at some point - maybe.
The springs that came with the car are lower than standard Herald - I was led to believe that they were Spitfire springs but now I’m not so sure. I’ve not done any work on the engine as it had a full rebuild a couple of years before my brother got the car - I’m assuming the twin carbs were fitted at this point.
I actually used the Herald as a daily for 3 years and did approx 30k using it for work - I was a roads engineers then - the hood was rarely up! - even during winter - and I managed to regularly get better than 33mpg.
The Herald has been lying at a mates farm for the last 3 or 4 years as due to divorce etc I now have no workshop - although I’m bringing it home next week to assess whats needing done for an MOT - shouldn’t be too much - I know that theres play on the steering so it might need a new rack - also needs a new front n/s calliper - probably also needs exhaust replacing.
I’m not sure whether to keep it, sell it or what. My daily Cinquecento Sporting is staying as I use it for work and it’s good fun. The new Mrs has no interest in the mechanical and cannot understand my obsession but 3 kids aint cheap so to be honest there’s no spare cash for cars - no doubt a predicament that a lot of us are in. This combined with no garage/workshop/storage makes it a difficult decision.
If I decide to keep it I’ll have to make some changes - change wheels / replace seats
Any suggestions gratefully received.
