With fuel prices going the way they are, my dream of having an at least moderately-quick Avenger that I can still afford to drive every day probably isn't going to happen... at least not using a modified 1600 or 1800 engine
So I started thinking about the possibility of swapping in a more modern engine - something under 2.0 litres (probably a 4 cyl then) that gets pretty good fuel economy (35+). Not too bothered about power output so long as it's more than the 80-odd horses that my Avenger GT 1500 engine puts out. Should be something I can work on fairly easily at home so nothing brand new, obviously... an engine from the 80s/early 90s would be ideal. Not a diesel because there's not a great deal of sound insulation in these old cars...
So if anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful

Alternatively, MX5 1.8 or 1.6, slick 5 speed box, small, light, won't stress the rest of the car too much , can get them from breakers with warranty for about 300...... Just another option

how about a nissan sr20, non turbo?? good on fuel, 150 brake out the box and gives the option of going for a turbo'd variant at a later date where sill power is achievable.

Rover K-Series? It has IIRC been used in loads of kit cars, not to mention the Elise.

1.8/2.0 litre Zetec/Vaux - Twin cams and good power/tuning potential yet economy too! Mate to a Sierra 5 speed. Alternatively go for the diesel but add soundproofing all over.

As I was scanning down the Readers Rides section my brain merged the title of this thread and the one above it together and I read it as "72 Avenger GT, Lancer GTi 16v Engine Swap"........ so that's my suggestion!

If you do decide to go diesel get a ford mondeo 2.0 tdi 45+ mpg!! better still, the VAG 1.9TDI, i average 50-55mpg in my A4, and at a steady 60mph on the m25 / a3 the other day i got 61.4mpg over 130miles! most common ones are 110hp & 173lbft, and in the a4 and passat they are already the right way around for rear wheel drive!
