Had a day at the unit on Saturday. First job, quick buzz over the engine bay with a wire brush in a grinder to see how bad the surface rust is Also got it up on stands too. Next was to have a look at the brakes, Astra GTE calipers are a direct fit on Kadett uprights. But I had to remove the disc covers, which meant hubs had to come off too. Didn't have the spline drive tool to get the discs off though The discs are an Audi disc that have an offset within 0.5mm of the kadett disc, but are 256mm dia and vented Worry was, would all of this definitely fit under a 13" wheel ?!? Panic over 8x13" compomotive CX

Quick clean up to check the metal under the wing Some more cleaning up and a little bit of grinding And some dish On to the rear axle and brakes, this is how it looks at the moment, I had some weld on brackets for an English axle and Cossie calipers, which are a tried and tested rear disc solution, but they are also seriously heavy So I found some nice lightweight alloy calipers instead Vw golf mk4 rears and came complete with handbrake cables I took some measurements to make the caliper mounting brackets, but I'm going to make these bolt on rather than weld on. Got the pedal box mounted again too But I still can't see the mounting solution yet Sure it'll come to me soon enough

Good to see some progress and interesting info on the Astra calipers, let's hope my Volvo 4 pots fit ok!

The Astra calipers, while a bolt on fit, do need the lock limiting or the lower slider pin hits the lower wishbone. So until I can make some funky new wishbones with adjustable spring platforms to give more clearance I'll have to sacrifice a few degrees of lock....

I recently did the same brake upgrade on my chevette, and had to limit the lock. I welded on a nut to the bottom arm, where it normally stops them, and then wound in a screw so i could adjust the lock. Needless to say, the amount of lock you loose is a shock the first time you drive it!
p.s did you redrill the audi discs and enlarge the centre bore also?

Audi 80. There are two types one with a lower off set which won't fit. Once you have then the Pcd needs to be redrilled so it can bolt to the inside of the hub. And the middle will need to be opened up. Sorry for the thread highjack.

Stolen from my post on the old chevettes.com forum:
Well yesterday I finally got 5 minutes to go to Eurocarparts and check on the audi brake discs
Ordered them and went back this morning to collect them.
Nice Brembo vented discs, 256 dia, 22mm thick, 56.5mm height
ECP Part number is: 104440150
List price: £22.50 each
Just need to get the new holes machined and the centre bore enlarged now You need to drill 4 holes at 92mm PCD and open the centre hole out slightly to locate the disc accurately on the rear of the hub
I Have both discs here (Kadett fit and new Audi) so I`ll get a picture tomorrow ;D

Cheers guys it's good to know these things, has either of you come across any more useful brake fitment info on your travels?

What other info were you after ? Depends what you want to do and really what size wheels you are running ?

I was after some further info on fitment of the volvo calipers really, I've not actually tried mine on yet so I'm not sure what they will need. I have 15's on it at the mo but would like the option of fitting 13's for track days etc. Basically I'm not set on using the volvo stuff and if I can find as many options as pos then I can choose, for example I have x3 pairs of the ate calipers you have on yours so I could use those instead.

I havent found any other useful info on what else will fit. But now that ate calipers fit, it opens up the road for the likes of wilwoods etc. I know my chevette was running standard calipers on the front with the XE in, thats how i bought it. not great!
Also for braided lines, calibra rear brake hoses fit a treat on the front on a chevette!

Volvo calipers with Carlton vented discs are a bolt on fit but the pads overhang the discs by a few mm. You also have to overcome the issues with the dual fluid feed. The ate calipers are lighter and supposedly more powerful ? But I don't know how they compare for feel ? The Ate /astra GTE disc/spacer combo stops rally mantas running all iron CIH motors with no fuss, so 750kg of kadett is going to be fine I am also limited to a 5:1 pedal ratio due to the floor in mine so I think the single piston calipers will be better suited. If they don't work then the next route will be Elise twin pot, and then wilwoods to keep the weight down ?

excellent updates !
i think youve struck a lucky combination with your wheels, or rather the offset. FWD 13" gm wheels definately don't fit over the 256 ATE calipers

I did already know about the dual feed issue, thats quite straight forward to over come(either a link over pipe or redrill the caliper) however i didnt know which disc to use - i had read something about honda prelude discs but i haven't a clue which ones? Ive just weighed the volvo 4pots and the astra GTE calipers minus pads and the volvos weigh 4.00kg dead and the astras weigh 3.95kg. I can't see the astras being more powerful though? They use 1 x 52mm piston and the volvo uses 4 x 38mm pistons. However i suppose it depends on pad area, matching ratios for pedal feel and force etc? I think the astras would suite your set up (and possibly mine if i use the corsa MC) better too. I can also confirm that the mounting holes are exactly the same between the volvo and the astra calipers so they will be a straight fit as you said Ps sorry for the hi jack to

That's interesting about the weight of calipers ! Was that with the vented type Volvo 4 pots ? Itd be interesting to try Volvo calipers on the redrilled Audi discs to see how that would fit. As I think the Carlton discs are slightly smaller diameter Have to try and find some locally I took some shots of the kadett type discs and the Audi ones earlier, I'll upload them in a bit

Some comparison pics That's kadett on top of Audi showing the centre bore needing opening up and the pcd redrilling And another pic......... I now have a selection of bosch water pumps for the charge cooling circuit, Large one is from a v8 AMG Merc, small one is very neat, and I also have a Vw one which is about midway between the 2

No Physical work on it this weekend, but a load of sorting out and virtual work inbetween real life ;D Just finished the Carb manifold design on Catia V5, I can now get the trial parts Lasercut tomorrow from perspex and check the fit against the head and carbs ;D There is a mismatch at present between the runners and the head face because the laser will only cut perpendicular to the material, and in reality there will be a 19 degree cut in the face to match the port angle, so I want to check the position of the ports first, then I can adjust the port shapes (Height) to allow for that 19 degree angle to be milled in after the profile is lasercut Hopefully an update tomorrow showing the actual resulting parts
