You chopped the springs while they were still on the car? Interesting! This is not recommended, unless you've done a lot of spring chopping,.. Rmad did the front of mine with them on the car.. its a damn fiddly job, but he knew what he was doing so.... I want to do a bit more chopping and the springs will be coming out to do it.

I've chopped out broken springs that had fallen out of the cups but never "working" ones whilst still on the car.

Well, I'd just like to say thanks for all the commments guys. This project was always going to be a bit tounge in cheek and all about fun. We're certainly having that! It's still being used on a daily basis and, apart from needing a couple of new front tyres, hasn't missed a beat. Oh, the passenger electric window packed up, too. But that's about it. Come see it on the Performance VW stand at Retro Rides on the weekend along with Project Wrong Burgundy (Mk1 Jetta) and the Rat (1976 Mk1 Golf running 2.0-litre 16v on ITBS). Anyway, to the update photos. Now, where were we? No, wait! Outside our local VW main dealership where it went down a treat. One of the tech guys remembered working on them back in the day. Memories! We've got a few other 'little' tricks lined up for it. Will be sure to keep you guys posted. Its this kinda thing that got me into retro motoring - the realisation that you could buy something interesting & cheap and with a few simple mods make something that is a real head turner. It always suprises me the reaction I get with my car, even just out and about on a daily basis - i'm sure its similar with the Santana.
I don't know what it is about late 70s/80s VW saloons but for me they just look so right just lowered on a set of nice wide wheels - think its got something to do with the boxy sharp lines & the lack of height in the front wings from the top of the wheel arch to the bonnet line?
Loving the top P.shop by the way ;D
