Apart from a very few exceptions they are all Auto's so the engines are usually in good nick, having not been over revved (yet!). It usually the bodywork on the early ones that goes or the auto box gives up the ghost, then they usually get scrapped, cause it too expensive to fix.
Finding a donor car is not a problem, pick up any local rag or Ad Trader and you'll find one with auto box problems for a few hundred pounds. Then flog the leather seat on ebay
The engines is very popular swap for sierra's, capri's and ford based kit cars. As it mates to the usual type-9, MT75 or T5 gearboxes and iirc the engine mounts allow it to slot straight into! From what I understand there is quite a lot of wirering, but the actual logistics aint that bad.
