the result of boredom and the need for a small sensible hatch to use for a work hack prompted me to purchase mein neue Wagen. Er heisst Herr Glücklich. Hier ist mein neue Wagen As you can see Mr. Happy was in fact Mr. really minging inside. So with the gf's help we began the arduious task of removing the mould, food, cack and yuck from the interior. the important bit.... and some strangeness..... Semi clean - quick photos After some quick comparisons it appears that a 2.3 5cyl audi lump is useable as an upgrade. Which is convenient, as I have some of these lying around. The Quattro is in fairly good nick however the white/black one is perfect anyone on here have any done one of these before ? or anything similar?

Hi matey! I love these Passat estates, nearly bought a minter last month but didn't get the overtime I was due so lost out!
The Passat GL5 had the 5 cyl engine, soooo, I reckon you should be able to drop the audi 2.3 5 Cyl into the Passat, the Passat GL5 engine mounts etc will probably do the job. Must be the same basic engine block, can't imagine them developing 2 different 5 cyl engines. Then again, the Audi V6 and the VW VR6 were different I think................
go on, do it!

i know why the Passat is Glücklich... he is clean inside now ;D You can put in a five cylinder engine, but you need to take one from the earlier Audi 80s (up to 87) or even the Passat (up to 88); later ones wont fit without work, as the engine mounts are different... also you need a new front panel, as the engine needs more space.... i would seriously advise you to fit a power steering, too, as with the heavy five cylinder engine steering is really hard without the power steering. In this case you need also different lower wishbones and struts (+sway bar) as there are a lot of differences between 4/5 cylinder, though they look similar, they wont fit... ah yes, and you need the thing between the steering wheel and the steering (don't know the english word for it...)... and also be aware of the fact, that Passats/Audis after 85 have hydraulic clutches, yours has a clutch cable, so you should find the correct gearbox, too.... but i really like your car, a couple of years ago those Polizei Passats were available, they are long gone by now.... though a friend of me has an original Passat including all the accessories : ;D

Finally got a chance to take a look over the car properly at the weekend. Seemed like a good idea at the time I knew the rear gear box mout needed replacing, and the exhaust clamp had come loose, nothing major. Then I thought I should take a look at the suspension, eeek The rather enthousiastic spring chopping by the previous owner has taken its toll so new springs and shocks bump stops etc will be needed all round. The os ds has a good inch of play in it and will need changing before if tries to escape. A couple of wheel rear bearings plus the little bits that I would just prefer to swap for new shiny bits, new brake cables, clutch cable, a tyre. Plenty to keep me busy anyway Looks like new wheels will have to wait untill next month

If you need front wheel bearings, you'll need them pressed out/in at the garage... I got my springs from HEREDon't get the rear shocks that are for sale on ebay... can't remember what thay're called, but they;re the yellow ones. They don't fit... The front's are fine though. I also got my new wishbones on german ebay HERE. They do a kit which includes the balljoints too though, but stopped doing it for the week when i ordered mine  - I just got the balljoints from GSF instead. Don't bother trying to change your wishbone bushes... it wont work. It;s either new wishbones, with bushes in, or don't bother... To get the top spring cap off you'll need the threaded washer removal tool from GSF. You'll also need some good strong grips, or a huge adjustable spanner to get the shock cap undone (that holds the shock into the housing) Sorry if you know all this already though!

A busy day of fettling and 2 rear wheel bearings, new rear shocks and 40mm lowering springs, new rear GB mount, oil filter&change rocker cover gasket and a clean. 'lowering springs' make it sit about 2" higher at the rear, but make it soo much nicer to drive already!Temporary nosedown stanceFronts next to play with inc a long overdue waterpump and cam belt! oh its neverending!

i still love old passat variant! check out mine if you want. what is the brand of your lowering springs?mine are FKautomotive but i don't use them now, i prefer to use a grinder on my stock springs...my passat is a rat for the moment but i plan to restaure it, mecanicaly at least so i will use lowering shocks and cut lowering springs(better stance than 20years old stock one i guess) if only it exists coilovers for this car!!!!
my roof is in the same style than your seats!
