I thought I might as well introduce myself by starting a thread on here, So I've scrimpted and saved & had group 4 shell built (& the tax man gave me a massive rebate too ;D ), I've always wanted to build a tarmac spec rally car & did start one 10 years ago that ended up as your typical unfinished project so I figured I needed a headstart this time. This isn't going to be a £50k build as I don't have that sort of money (I wish) & will probably take some time. Fortunately I have the skills to do the majority of the work myself so materials are going to be the major outlay. Enough waffle, you want pictures! Early days: As it arrived to me: The plan is to build it as close to a professional car as possible, 5 link rear, wide atlas, coilovers all round, etc etc. I'm having trouble with engine choice at the moment so the old Pinto will get dropped in for the shake down period. The car has moved on a bit since the photos were taken, there's many parts of the motorsport shell I don't like - the attention to detail is missing & not normally needed as they end up in the trees more often than not. This looks like an interesting forum with a good mixture of everything! Keep it retro!

That looks ace. What about an S2000 engine 230bhp out of the box and easily tuned. Would cost a fair wad to get an XE or Zetec to that sort of power.

volvo turbo power, just for a change, cheap and strong and massivly tunable wont be doing any rallying with a turbo motor in a mk2. MSA rules say you can only fit a "forced induction engine" if the vehicle left the factory with one. common rally lumps are vauxhall motors, pinto, N/A cossie, S2000 would be really good even just standard! your shell looks really nice, hard part now is keeping it that way ;D

Only reason the rollcage is white is it got in the way when the shell was sprayed!... 14 point weld in jobbie. Engines, it's either the tried and tested route or something not done before. Funny volvo power being mentioned, any pointers on which lump to look at?. I was offered a 5 cyl Focus ST3 lump out of a rolled car for peanuts but I'd need to do homework on turning it through 90 & sorting the gearbox. S2000 lump is a tricky one with sump, bellhousing & management. If you use all of the matched components for engine control its not so bad - aftermarket is tricky 'cos of controlling the vtech mechanism. Zetecs I don't like, ditto for Duratec. XE is a maybe or an N/A cosworth but it all starts adding up to a £6k conversion. I'm looking into Mazda rotaries and Toyotas as options.

As has been said I didnt think you could use turbos?
The S2000 should be fairly easy to fit if you use the S2000 gearbox etc. You have to use an aftermarket V-tec controller I think. Ive seen a 306 with a Civic type R engine in so the wiring must be sortable.
My flatmates dad had a Mk3 Astra rally car that was running a 295bhp XE. The engine was a work of art but needed fairly regular rebuilds which was expensive.

Thats the way to do it. Nice job. Looks the biz. Good luck choosing an engine. Try to work out a buget and what you can do for the money. Only if you put an engine in temp, it either becomes a permenent item or you change plans several times and end up with a collection of engines and gearboxes. Or is that just me.....mmmmm!

How exciting. Since its ground up, i'd want the right enine from the start, but thats just me - it'd take me ages to sort out how to do a 'swap'. I guess the Pinto offers some reasons, but i'd want summat different. keep us posted.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Wow, serious stuff! What about a Rover V8 from a L-R 110 station wagon, easy 130 bhp from those bad boys.
