Ooooohhhhh- tell us more about those driveshafts? re they datsun based? If you don't have the rubber doughnut couplings how are you taking up the shock loads - have you changed over to a sprung centre clutch disc? I like them top hats too!!! Great car- I have seeing classic cars evolve constantly on this forum

Great car- I have seeing classic cars evolve constantly on this forum The shafts have biult in dampers with springs to assist and support, they were made and extensively tested by a friend.I believe they are Marina based with custom components machined to fit. Sprung centre clutch is on the to do list along with Spax or protechs to complete the new set up.

Top Hats.... Before After these are machined from one solid piece to fit over the damper and inside the spring with only the necessary room for fit and function.

Cool. So you say the driveshafts have a built in damper? How so? I can see the spring to help keep them extended, I guess to stop the inner axle from falling out of the diff head. But is there some sort of torsional damper built into the splined section?
Those top hats are so simple and clean. I presume the damper shaft length is the same so do you use check straps to stop the springs from dislodging at the top when the wheel drops over a light 'jump' sort of thing or when the car is jacked up?

My understanding is that they are splined with an interal spring, the external spring as you say helps to keep everything in place.with twin ujs it helps to counter the torque into the trans axle,a sprung plate clutch ie; Morris 1000 will help relieve additional preasure on the gearbox.so far they are proving to do a brilliant job with no vibrations,if anything they appear much smoother than running donuts. The Top Hats are brilliantly simple, you presume correctly the dampers are unchanged.for piece of mind straps will be fitted although it would appear they are not vital, under load and enthusiastic cornering they haven't presented any issues yet,its not like anything can travel far. A new clutch plate is on it's way and will be modified to do the job, over the next few weeks I intend to set the car up and then just enjoy it through the summer.

It's a big day tomorrow, the plan is to take the engine out for the first time since the rebuild some 3 years ago, replace the standard clutch with a reworked sprung plate for a Morris 1000,fix the thermostat housing coolant leak, fit some check straps and have it back on the road by late lunch.... 😃No pressure,Game-on!!

After a 10 o'clock start and a break for lunch it was back on the road 4pm....... With help from a good friend we divided up the jobs and got stuck in We had a couple of captive nuts break away which slowed us down some what and then we got to the release bearing that had totally released itself from it's housing! Luckily I was in the right place and in the best company to have a new one fabricated while I cracked on with the rest of the jobs,ie;the leak, clean up and pipework. Everything then went together with relative ease, our celebration was only momentarily hindered by a high pitched grinding noise on start up which was totally my own fault because I left the stone guard in place and folded it under the fly wheel!! (see picture above) It didn't take long to sort out and with seamless gear changes and no high pitch grinding it was back on the road in time for an early dinner rather than a late lunch,it turned out to be a great day in fantastic company and we ended up doing a lot more than we set out to do,so Win-win. We were both able to make it to the Walton on Bridge breakfast club on Sunday too, which had a great turnout too and one of the best ever I think. The check straps can wait for another day.....

Out and about with the Heathrow chapter of the Imp club,if you like your big engineering then the Kempton steam pump museum is a must. It was also a great opportunity to try out my new seats.😁

This car has to be like a favourite child or pet, you just keep getting pleasure from it.
And every time you take it out, it makes people smile.
Good job on getting it sorted, out and used.

😁this has just come to my attention on 'the book of face'. It's the second time the Tiki-mobile appeared in Custom Car magazine, once back in May 2005 I think it was and now in August 2018. Thanks for the compliment CC!

😎Baked beans and pop rivets..... The old Cherry Bomb has been showing it's age recently, the honeycomb core has broken up and holes have started to appear along the barrel. It has put in a good performance having been dinked and knocked off on numerous occasions,to be honest it owes me nothing because that is pretty much what it cost second hand, but I thought it deserved a patch while I look for a replacement.😁 I have to say,It's rather loud and I fear it will be setting off car alarms if I venture into indoor car parks......
