Not a good one - finally got the bottle re-gassed and got the welder working ( it packed up last week so a week of annoyance! ) SO Knocked up the panels to replace the inner/outer sills, bottom sealer and floorpan edge. sweet ....... the week not a complete waste then. Bottled up - time to bite the bullet today and get crackin....... ;D Plugged the inner sill, ready for stitchin..... floorpan edge sorted and straight edge used for patch alignment then a nosy garage user came stumbling in, tripped over the gas connector and the bottle went over, breaking the connector and emptying the whole damn thing! I dragged it outside to prevent any further fekk-up, turned around and he'd disappeared! Son of a beeatch, never seen him before and not likely to again now! So ground to a halt - one step forward, two steps back

WELL - Ages since I got into the garage – a lot of work and then grandfather having a heart attack meant a lot of time in different countries to the project! All calmed down and he’s better now so I had a couple of days free – that and the fact MaggotTurbo and OB have given me a kick up the ar*e to have this at RR08. You may remember the first thoughts on replacing the inner gubbins……. Well I wasn’t happy with it and sorted out another approach Just to get the correct sizing As I’d managed to pick up the new gauges Which improved the welds no end (when I remmebered to turn ‘em on!) So I promptly attacked the rusty behemoth, who dares wins ‘n all that Revealing yet more of the rotten stuff Leaving me with a load if these And this -including one dead grinder Day two saw me head off to a friend with a compressor – the gearbox wouldn’t separate from the O/D and I needed to spin it up to a decent speed with an air driven ratchet while activating the O/D from a car battery so it would release the tension in the springs. One 30min drive later – I arrived an opened the boot – TA DA! With friend askig “which part needs to come off then?” I sheepishly got back into the car and headed back t the garage…….. The day got slightly worse as I prepped some panels to fill the holes I’d made Meant I took a step back – a little of this And some prepping of G/Box mountings etc… And I was on a run……..boot inner tacked in I didn’t even contemplate making this one But tacked it on too……(turn your head to the right - I forgot to rotate the jpg!!!) Along with part of the inner arch Ably assisted by my cheapo toy (sales on at local place meant this – including drill - €24!) Meant I cracked on until the GF showed up with essentials And a final sprint to the end of the night had me feeling as if something was accomplished Not fooling myself, still got this To tackle – and then the other side I’m probably going to tack in the main parts and prep the panels for the rest. If my stitch welding doesn’t improve as I go along the sills I’ll bite the bullet and get it done by a garage owning friend – as long as I make RR08! This weeks plans are G/Box rebuild, bleed clutch and brakes – await new cross shaft, inlet/exhaust gasket and put it all back together. More welding and panel chopping too of course….. Later…….. John

Good luck John! Looks like you've got your work cut out if you really want to keep to that deadline. You could always recycle the Pizza box into a quality sill repair

Due to Brownie points earned with ‘quality time’ and leaving the GF to have a lie-in while I did the shopping, I grabbed a few hours in the garage today. The GBox was in dire need of help – so took this And this A few gaskets, new needle bearings, oil seals and raking of the brains to remember how it went together again……… and ended up with I slapped on the gearstick and all gears went in fine…….. only problem being the lack of cross-shaft in the recent spares box. Hopefully it’ll arrive tomorrow and all the running gear will be back in this week. Ignore the scotchblocks – from previous owner and will of course be replaced…….. NEXT – More rust! Finished off the sill – inner, outer, bottom and some extra strengthening And then sealed it all up with the ba*tard of an end plate that I ballsed up 3 times in the making! Floorpan done, sealed to rear arch etc... etc… Rear Wing next – inner/floor and made a bit for the outer too (another pants self made that took forever!) Inside and Out I was flying, ignoring the pain in my back and heading for a right hand side finish…… ran out of wire – chuffin ‘eck. Will crack on this week at some point – chopping out the passenger side I suppose The GF just pulled a half-inch piece of welding wire out of my back, so I’m looking at plans for a rotisserie too, enough welding on my back lying in the detritus EDIT - I know of the two small holes in the arch, patches done, just forgot to do 'em..... on the tick list for this week

Did a search & found your car John, welding all that rot is a nasty job, good luck with it! A few tips though. The metal you are using is not that good, it is bright (?) zinc coated, hence the white 'fluff' on your welds, this contaminates the welds, so making it far harder to weld. You would be far better using std steel (no zinc coating) as paint also has trouble sticking to the zinc unless you use special primers. When welding upside down, you need to up the wire speed by approx 1/2 again for the same power settings, IE speed 3 for bench work would be approx 4 1/2 for upside down stuff. Cleanliness is everything in welding, grind all weld areas with a flap disc to get bright steel, MIG welders hate rust, it contaminates the welds and is a curse word to weld to. Looking at your tacks, I would say you are not using enough power either, they look very cold with little penetration, try upping the power till it blows holes in the panel and then back off slightly. Best to practice welding some of the rusty junk bits to get the speed/power settings familiar to you, then hopefully the welds on the car will go nice & smoothly. Welding rust, upside down, to poor metal is the worst kind of welding to do, almost guaranteed to get bad results even if you are good at welding, so no criticism meant!

Mark, yup - duly noted mate. I did realise and PM'd OB. The latest stuff was after another practice session and some much better beads produced. I did realise on the power settings and have been 'adjusting' Thanks for the advice - if I had anyone nearby to give lessons I'd be paying right now! ;D OB has offered hosting a weldathon should I get truelly scuppered Anyone wanting free B n B in Brussels for a week or so - welding lessons in exchange would be acceptable (don't tell the GF )

Sound advice there Jon. If you´ve got nothing better chop some plating out of an old door or roof and clean the paint off, it´s a lot easier to weld than that zinkplated stuff. As you´ve got most of it done though try and clean as much of the zink off as possible before you touch your welds up!!! ;D If your welder has no setting between "bird cr@p" and "blowing holes" go for the blowing holes setting and just spot weld with no gaps inbetween..... verstehe? Two weeks to go sir!!!

OB - yup, been messin with settings and got it sizzling along nicely thanks mate. The gods are not smiling on my sprint to the finish and I'm now nursing 3 stitches after 6hrs in emergency - my initial inspection and sticking plaster was not enough, the tendon was damaged and they've put me back together. No clue on what I'll do with this now - GF has barred me from garage action TFN. I'll skeak in and spanner some bits on I hope - then work out cutting panels and welding........ cutting it fine (no pun intended : Still determined to get it there though

Great work enthusium is worth a lot IMO. Pity about the wound like. Hey blackpopracing, these snippets of wisdom in peoples readers rides are really helpful, what if we fetched some beers tokens each and came round to yours for a lesson, that would be cool. Educational anyway, my ameteur welding has halted progress, cuttung back out is the current trend. practice practice though I hear ye!

Hand injuries can be nasty, once went through a tendon on my left hand with a grinder and was out of commission for 3 weeks with a splint whilst it healed(micro surgery to put it back together). Glad you're on the mend quickly, hope you get the trummy together in time!
