so, i sold my crx a while back, and finding another hasnt been as easy as i first thought. anyway, i needed a car to potter about in, so i had a micra for a while, but the mot ran out, but heres my latest ride- 1985 mazda 323 wagon yes, this was considered an interior in 1985 bit of satin on the grille, and temporary J plates its so old that rear seat belts aren't included, the intertainment consists of an am radio, and it has 4 wind up windows. however it is rwd  which is quite fun with 155 section tyres.

That's quite a sweet little thing! Ripe for some rimmage and stickage, minor detailing and enjoying!

That's great, there was one of these for sale on eBay UK not that long ago - I would've bought it if I hadn't just bought my £77 Primera. Fake wood veneer on the dash? Slick!

Ohh i've been waiting for this! the dash looks more basic than my hatch, whats your plans?
Hirst: whilst the new fwd 323 came out in 81, the previous generation wagon remained in production with just a facelift.

originally i was gonna paint the roof/hatch/a pillar/bonnet satin black, but most of it is really solid so it seems a shame to do it. i painted the rims cos they were mega tatty, but i really need to fit a radio that works....

I had to come back and have another look at this, it really is a beautiful car by my terms. I love pretty much everything about it, my favourite things being the headlights/grille combo, the crease midway down at door level, the interior carpets and the little analog clock.
My vote: continue tidying it, fender mirrors, old Japanese wheels. Then just enjoy it! It's a genuinely great looking car already and doesn't need spoiling with silly trends.
Just noticed the seat fabric!! Cool!

This is a great car, I love these. Is it a 1500? In my experience they are amazingly quick considering what they look like. The garage i used to work at had a D-reg one, it was fuggin rapid! mega fun on slippery roundabouts with its 155-section Uzbekistani liquorice remoulds. Eventually it died due to rot problems.

Loving the JDM plates.
Quite shocked at how basic the interior is for an '85 model.
I drove my 306 around uni with a set on (plus relevant class weight parking sticker) baffling people.
I'll post some pics up when I get the chance.

Looks good! Higher roofline on the facelift models like that, but with the blacked-out pillars it's reduced that effect.

I Like this very much - is it pretty much an estate version of the bug-eye "MK1" 323 with the front end of the FWD GLC type grafted on? Interior looks very much like GLC as well.
323 Estates always seem to be a previous shape to the saloons, I think the BF Estate outlived or came close to outliving the BG.

Exatly that, with the addition of a 5spd thats about it. i think the mk1 bug-eye wagon carried on for for a while after the fwd 323 was introduced until it got facelifted.

I've looked it up in my dutch repair manual (I owned a BD hatchback 1.1).
The mazda 323 BD FWD was introduced late in 1980. The facelift was late in 1982. It was discontinued somewhere halfway 1985.
The manual doesn't cover the estate but it does say it doesn't cover it because "even the newest model is still essentially an old 323 with RWD". That seems to acknowledge the comment that it was not changed until the facelift in '82.
Toyota actually did the same thing with their corolla estate in those years.
