I own this. It's a Ford Motorsport shell, 2 litre Cosworth turbo engine, LSD, cage, single seat. The plan is to do service it, then do a couple of track days then eventually we would like to run it in pre-93 Classic Touring Car series this year. We'll start half way through the season. At first it's all about making the car reliable. Then we can think about going faster. The wear and tear on a race car is major. So I hope we can survive a series without major problems. Charlie

Q plate as it's built from a shell. I'm surprised it's got a registration document at all because it's always been a race car. I'm never going to use it on the road. The trailer's coming in a couple of weeks, then it's off to Brands Hatch to see if we can get it to go round and round without breaking too much.

Excellent work,.. Have you already got your competition license or are you doing that at the same time? I guess Brands Hatch is your nearest centre?
Hopefully people from this here forum can get out and get behind you with support at the circuits... keep us updated on goings on..

Kind words HotWire, thanks. Once I have done the first track day I'll go for the ARDS test - this is to get a UK competition licence. There's a lot to do before then.
On Monday we're bleeding the brakes, fitting new front pads, changing the oil, fitting the new seat, fitting the new harness, changing the HT leads, rotor and cap, checking all the connectors, changing the wheels (white 16 inch wheels with semi slicks), checking the head bolts are tourqued properly, changing the broken front indicator, re-mounting a couple of small things, fitting the front strut brace, and going over the car with a fine tooth comb to be sure that nothing's going to fall off or come apart when we start using it.
And yes, I'm in East Dulwich so the nearest track for me is Brands Hatch.

Thanks. Great pics. The Sierra looks very tidy. Mine's running a standard engine with a turbo restrictor and standard boost. This is in line with pre-93 Classic Touring Car regulations. Charlie

Predictably I approve! Thats too cool. I lover the fact its a propper race car built as a race car built from a MS shell. You know though, (i guess MOT may be tricky) just for the hell of it i'd love to see it on the road too! Awesome stuff. Keep us posted how it all goes.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Thats a really good point BC. The last thing you want to be doing in the paddock is your own maintenance. If you're competing, having to pick up a spanner can really lose your focus, so having a bunch of mates holding the tools is invaluable. Trackside maintenence will in most cases be simple stuff. I guess you may be doing two races per meeting so you'll need people checking fluid levels, wheel nuts etc. Its also great to have someone to shout at when you come into the pits!! LOL.

I used to help out with a rally car on local rallies and [quiet mode between you and I]I've been known to help out at stock car racing events where friends are involved - or bangers[/quiet mode between you and I] I'm passable with a set of spanners - Just - of course sometimes you need to be more handy with a large hammer!!! To be honest whilst I like watching motorsport I actually need something more to hold my interest these days (or is it keep me awake)

Much kindness ensues. Thanks all for the offers. Luckily there are two of us involved in this venture Ivo, my long suffering but very mechnically minded mate and me.
The race series has a 15 minute qualifying then a 20 minute or so race in one day. There are a few hours between the two so if anything goes awry there's time to try and fix it.
One of our bog jobs is to make a track toolkit with everything we'll need + clamps connectors and spares to try to keep running even if something breaks.
Reanimation - this will never get an MOT. It'll never be on the road.
If we can make it to the end of this year as friends, with the car intact, and our budget still reasonable then next year we'll try to run the whole season of 11 races at 11 different tracks.
Then end of 2008 will be time to make it go faster or maybe invest in a faster version. The place I bought it, Touring Car Spares, specialises in tracking down touring cars from teams and sells them to private individuals for this side of hobby motorsport. He had some very cool machinery in his workshop!
As you can imagine this can become a very very expensive hobby.

Charlie Trackdays aren't cheap either but if you can get your kicks in a place where all the traffic goes in the same dirrection (or should do) then when you drive on the road you tend not to drive as quick Result licence stays with you and doesn't go an a 1,3 or 6 mth holiday
