The other week I did a days work for a builder(I'm an electrician),we got talking about cars...and he mentioned that he had an old Beetle in one of his lock-ups that he had restored in 2000,drove about for the summer ,then got bored of it and it has sat there ever since
Interested,but playing it cool,I siad i wouldn't mind a look,so I did.
Under an inch of dust was a very solid 1971 1300 Beetle,I was keen so I asked him how much he wanted for it.
He said that if I didn't invoice him for the days work(about £200),I could have the bug.....Result! ;D ;D ;D
So,the deal was done....
As found, tempted to leave it like this....pure rat!
Came out of it's resting place with a bit of persuasion from my Transit
Not too bad after almost 7 years hibernation.
Rear drums freed up nicely with a bit of persuasion(Big hammer! )
Interiors O.K. apart from a curse word drivers seat
Very sound under here
Roped Suzy in to pumping up the flat tyres
Spare wheel well is a real rot-spot on these, this one's rock solid
After mistakenly leaving the full-beam on for ages  the battery died, roped in Transit to jump start.
Home!! After a scary tow from Crawley(for suzie, not me  ) and a broken front towing eye  we made it back to out house.
No Tax,No MOT  .....but we at least got it insured in the morning....good old Footman James came up trumps,£46 for the both of us on the policy, can't complain about that!
I love old cars....
After a solid afternoon of cleaning,polishing,T-cutting and vacuming, she came up a treat
I'd be quite happy to show it as is,a lot worse around.....
And the final, finishing touch.....a popularclassics sticker of course! 8)
Got brake cylinders and shoes on order from GSF,and service items(not much on a bug!) and I'm going to invest in new rubber all round(best too really) BUT....I've booked it in for a ticket in a fortnight's time
Wish me luck guys....
The other day,I got told of a Triumph nut who had sadly passed away.
His daughter had inherited the house, and wanted to clear the cars.
I missed out on a barn full of cars/spares which was apparently cleared by a lucky scrap-man :x
But,I found these 2 and made a call to John-Saab to help with storage/transport.
2 x Triumph TR7 F.H.C's
Both look reasonably sound, especially the green one...I think maybe the white one might have been bought as a spares car because it's missing it's rear light clusters, but that seems to be all and it would seem to make a good car in it's own right.
Oh yep,the deal we came too.....remember the Beetle cost me roughly £200?
Well I got these for £200 the pair
Photo's:-
70's tartan-tastic interior in good shape.....suit bay city rollers fan
Both very solid cars, got the green one fired up & went for a spin(on the way to MOT centre  ) and by all accounts it drove very, very sweet.
Roped in the Rover to jump the green one.
Triumph/Saab combo 8)
Mr John-Saab looking excited in the trouser department with our new find.
Lot's of spares in both boots including this new stainless steel full exhaust system from Rimmer bros
The white one is mega-solid....doesn't look like it's been restored either,BUT it's an auto and I have a sneaky feeling Mr John-Saab is already attached to the green one,and will keep it
Well,John-Saab and I recovered the other (white) one back yesterday,I wasn't supposed to be there having just set up a barbeque when the phone rang,John on his own wanting a hand......so my guest's had to wait for their grub....but hey, some things are more important
Found a battery in the boot, stuck it in but as dead as a dodo
Apart from the rust seen here around the bonnet rubber,it's very sound...strut tops, inner wings all perfect
Roped the Rover in for another jump-start but no luck.
Realised it was lacking in fuel,so...I found a can in the back garden,John reckoned it was builders p*ss...in which case it would have been more flammable than 4-star
Poured it in....but it came straight out the underneath
Fuel pipe is knackered,so no immediate start for this one then.
Rear arches/boot area is perfect.
Unusual dash-mounted map reading light in here.
All loaded up and ready for the journey
Not sure what to do with this one,John's girlfriend Sarah is having the green one...the white one is such a solid car,BUT an auto which I would imagine is not sought after, might e-bay it?
Bit of luck,or what???
