Here's my BMW 1602 at Wheels Day this year. I've had it for about a month, and when I bought it, the brakes were non existant, the clutch was slipping and the car was overheating due to a dodgy radiator. Since then, I've received some further bad news, in that the clutch is no longer available! Clutches are just something that I've always really taken for granted, so it's a bit of a shock to be told that these ones are no longer made. There is a firm in Norfolk who will recondition my clutch plate for a handsome sum, but I have to send it to them first, leaving the car off the road for at least a month. Well, I can now say that the brakes are working perfectly (bleeding them sorted that out), and I've sourced a very good second hand radiator off eBay for £40 (not bad!). I have however noticed that the water pump is looking a bit sorry for itself as well though (it sprays you with water as you are leaning over it!) So all in all, not great. But.... Bingo! I've managed to purchase a complete, supposedly rebuilt 1602 engine off eBay for the not unreasonable price of £100, complete with clutch and water pump. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=005&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=150108764059&rd=1&rd=1 Although I do have to go up to Leeds to pick it up - this Saturday. Now does anyone know how easy it is to lower these things?? ;D

I really like these too, a real nice shape. I had an 02 some years ago but it got a bit to rusty Thats a shame about the clutch, have you tried all the motor factor type places?

Lots of 02 love out there so may be worth trying to contact the relevant club.
Really like these myself. Truly groundbreaking for 1961 (well, the 02 cars didn't come out until 1966). Front is MacPherson strut so simple for lowing. Rear, not so sure.

Cheers guys. I've done a good deal of searching for clutches, and it really does appear that they're not available any longer. The hot ticket is to re-machine the flywheel to accept a 2002 clutch (which is larger). I'll just go with the clutch and water pump from my eBay engine. Still not sure whether to swap the whole engine, or just use the bits from it to fix my existing one - all depends on whether it really is 'reconditioned'....
Fun, fun, fun! Will update the thread as and when any further progress is made!

Front is MacPherson strut so simple for lowing. Rear, not so sure. Rear is IRS with coil springs, so I could cut them down/ heat them to lower it. Not sure whether I really should go for it though - it rides really nicely as is.....

I'd leave it as it is, suspension wise anyway, looks excellent! Good luck with the clutch business

Engine from eBay picked up and brought back to sunny Kingston!
The guy chucked in a spare gearbox, manifold with carb, another manifold, starter motor and alternator for an extra tenner - I think he was glad to get rid of them....
On first inspection, the engine seems good. I've taken the clutch off, and it looks hardly worn, so my clutch problem is sorted. The water pump is good as well, and it does indeed look like the engine could have been reconditioned fairly recently.
So: do I just take the clutch and water pump off this engine, or do I put this whole engine in? If I did put it in, I would need to buy all the gaskets etc, and it is an unknown quantity, but then it does look good.
Decisions decisions....

OK... just the clutch off the new engine going in tomorrow, along with the gearbox. Now what the hell happened to my radiator? Lost all coolant last Saturday, and this is what I saw. The fan blades seem in good condition, and nothing has been lost from the engine... I'm at a loss as to what could have caused this damage! It's a good job I was changing the radiator anyway (new one put in on Tuesday)

Finally got it into the garage: But then came across this.... Propshaft to gearbox coupling is dead, and has been bad for such a long time that the gearbox flange nuts have worn away the propshaft flanges.... Not good I just hope that the propshaft is usable.... £60 more down the drain for a new coupling and centre bearing (but it should mean that the car should stop being noisy to drive....)

I've created another thread for my 230SL. Meanwhile, back in '02 land, things have been quite productive: Old clutch out: That dodgy coupling again: it had split in two! Gearbox all built up with new shift bushings - feels like new! Just a shame I've got the wrong release bearing, or I would have put it back in today. Still... have to wait for the new propshaft coupling anyway.

Well what can I say! All done now. All in all, since I've had the 1602, I've done the following work:
Brakes. These were dire - rears adjusted, fluid replaced and bled Propshaft Coupling. This had perished completely - replaced with new genuine BMW part Gearbox. Was rumbling and whining in 3rd gear - replaced with item from eBay Gearbox mountings. Old ones had turned to the consistency of plasticine - replaced with new genuine BMW parts. Gear shift bushings. Gear shift was looser than a loose thing - replaced with new parts Water pump. Car was overheating, and pump was leaking like a sieve - replaced with virtually new item from eBay engine Clutch. Was slipping badly - replaced with virtually new item from eBay engine Clutch release bearing. Looked worn out - replaced with new genuine BMW part Alternator. Rubber mountings had perished - replaced with virtually new item from eBay Radiator. Old one leaked, and car was overheating - replaced with virtually new item from eBay Oil pressure switch. Old one leaked badly - replaced with virtually new item from eBay engine
Total cost of eBay parts: £50 for radiator, £110 for all other bits - (and I still have the recon engine if need be)
Total cost of New parts: about £150
And the result - the car has been transformed! No more messy oil leak from the engine. No more overheating. No more bad vibrations in the car. A nice tight gearshift. A clutch that has bite. No more loud grumblings in 3rd gear... it almost feels like a modern car to drive now, it's so refined. In fact - it's a perfect retro-ride!
