yeh, sounds bizzare but the injection cold start system has a sensor in the water system & when theres air in the coolant flow every time it passes the sensor it makes it read crazy, richen up the mixture/up the idle momentarily............presto....idle surge!!

I'm having a similair idle issue with my '91 Lancer - when warm the revs drop to 1.5 for 10 seconds or so then settle at just below 1. Any minor change to the revs when idle - throttle, PAS/brake movement etc lifts them straight back up to 1.5 again.

Could that be down to air in the cooling system too?

This car has been sitting doing nothing for the 6 months since I bought it. The first 4 of these it sat in my side garden then then got bumped off to LankyTim's yard for a couple of months.



Today I went to collect it and towed it home. It was loking a bit miserable in the yard with saggy tyres, a lop-sided bumper and covered in tree sap, however once home a quick wash had it looking much more feasible.







I wanged a battery on and in true J style it fired straight up.

Tomorrow I shall tow it down to the workshop and this week work will commence by doing the waterpump and cambelt, hopefully then it will tick over Ok. Currently the WP leaks like a sieve. I have heard this is a sreal stinker of a job so if anyone has done it please get in touch.

So this car got towed down to the workshop on Sunday.



First job to do is the waterpump. I was sure it was goosed hence the hunting at idle, the pump was letting the coolant waz out everywhere. Either that or there was a big hole in the engine!


The pump is in here somewhere, never worked on one of these before but i'm sure it will turn up if i remove enough bits.


I started to take off the power steering set-up, covers, engine mount and the like.


Working from the wheelarch i took the shielding etc which had to come off anyway, due to the front bumper being on the cock;



I am gonna take that right off, check all the mountings etc and put it back on properly.

eventually I found the WP and was pleased to see a tell-tale stain where the water had been pi55ing out everywhere:



a bit more fannying about and it came off.


It was well knacked, you can see the broken seal just poking out behind the impeller here.


Here is the hole it came from, I cleaned up the mating face with WD-40 and wet & dry.

I had had a bit of luck getting a new WP off eBay for £15 delivered. these cost £40 from my favourite car parts shop so that was a great buy. I whanged it on:



and started putting the guards and things back on. I did not get the job finished as i am fitting a new cam belt which i will be picking up tonight,, hopefully tonight I will get it going though, with a cooling system full of proper coolant I am hopeful of a lovely smooth idle. More tomorrow!

Really like these - & this looks like a really good example - how many family saloon cars ever had pop-up lights?

Strange how some bits on this car (rear lights, indicator stalks, dash layout etc) Remind me of my DC2 Integra Coupe that was 10 years newer - suppose it figures?

Those Centra rims would look nice on something small, old & VW but don't really suit your Integra as you say..

BTW what is the red car on the left in this pic?
