Well, I have now got a Retro Ride, even though it is not been achieved in an ideal way. My Dad passed away over the weekend, and my brother and I were able to negotiate with the bank who are the executors of his will to exclude his car and allocate it to me. It is a 1981 Mercedes Benz 200. Been garaged and mollycoddled all its life, had every rubber , pipe, grommet etc replaced with original MB parts by an Italian mechanic a few years ago , costing more than the car had cost my dad new when he bought it originaly in '81. Done 206000km, and maintained "regardless of cost" by Mercedes Benz. My brother and a friend drove it back to Johannesburg almost 700 miles yesterday without it missing a beat. My brother was in his pickup and Isabel who drives a new Toyota drove the Mercedes, she was very impressed and commented on being prepared to trade her car for one of these. The plan is that is stays permanently garaged at my brothers place, insured by him as a second car, at about £8/month, and that I use it when I go to Africa on holiday etc. Maybe bringing t here one day. Pics: So, whatcha think ??

PS: Brother will take it in next week to be Valeted and paint buffed to within an inch of its life.
My brother also like a loud exhaust, so his plans are to replace the standard exhaust with a custom made stainless freeflow system which he had a quote for today at about £50.00
Can't wait.

That looks like a minter! Excellent cars, W123's. Pity the car came to you under such circumstances. My brother also like a loud exhaust, so his plans are to replace the standard exhaust with a custom made stainless freeflow system which he had a quote for today at about £50.00 I assume that's S.A. prices?! That's amazingly cheap!!!

Sorry to hear about your loss, but glad there was something good to come from it, will be nice to keep the car going in your dad's memory.
U got me thinking about the '80 250 sat in my grans garage rusting away (probably).

If only everything in life was as cool as a retro VW racer.

SA Prices yes, consider you can rent a guy to work your garden, or mix concrete by hand all day for £5-10 per day. So £50 which is R650 in SA for a custom , hand built stainless unit is pretty good.
That is as you say.... kept in his memory, He used to buy new Mercs every 2-3 years, the 230/6's and when he got this one, he said it was perfect..... they just totally bonded.
I have asked my brother to register it (He lives in a different province to where the car was registered) on a custom/private plate....... This is if it has not been taken, the cost is usually less than £200 (R2000, when R14=£1)
Reg plate I asked him to register is: RETRO GP where the GP stands for Gauteng Province (Gauteng means Gold and is the area around Johannesburg)

RET RIDES would be good ;D Problem is amount of letters..... every province has a 2 letter suffix that has to be added in..... so on my bike I used to have 444 HITEC, where the EC was Eastern Cape Here is a Subaru with a £150 plate... different provinces have different price structures.... EC is cheapest in the country.

if your going to lower it only go for 2 or 3 inches. anymore will ruin all the good work your dad did in keeping it beautiful. unless of course your prepared to change driveshafts, tie bars and tyres every few months like me.

Nope TCC, The plan would not be for much dropping, just to fill the arches with 17inches of beauty, and not compromise what will be minimum of 700mile trips to the coast, and then the same back. Thats why I have asked for the photoshop champs to drop it a bit and graft the wheels from the C-Class onto it.

Bad news....... ;D
My brother who is caretaker for this one texted this week, the insurance is going up on it..... OOOppps.
About £1/month or just under £12/year.
Wonder if I can handle the increase ;D
Had immobiliser fitted as part of insurance expectation, with said part failing within one week. Repaced by fitment company FOC of course.
Clutch, release bearing etc replaced about 2 weeks ago, cost a Staggering £140.
Cannot wait to get back to South Africa to use it for a 3 week roadtrip in around December , in high summer.

Do it!

Car now sold on to a new home. I believe it will give another lifetime of good use, as long as the new owner gives it as much care as dad did.
