So I bought this off the bay a while ago for £102. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220069266956Its a one owner job with 95k on the clock. This week i finally picked it up using an A-frame which I bought a while ago. I towed it back to Fatha_Bo11ox's garage for evaluation. god-awful wheeltrims! The bodywork is quite decent actually, it has the original paint all over. There is no real external rot but I coud see some grot hiding under the bumper, more about that in a moment. Engine bay looks all present + correct. The engine runs well but the exhaust makes a right din, the seller had clonked it while loading it onto a car trailer. I had a ratch about and found: Busted exhaust manifold. I forgot to take any pics of the interior; it is in good nick but is grubby. A proper seats-out scrub-up should work wonders. The elec sunroof, locks, windows and radio aerial all work properly which is nice! Moving round the car I spotted the standard-issue milky windscreen, duly placed on the 'to ignore' list: And getting to the back a fuel leak. Closer investigation revealed that this is just the rubber pipe which is leaking so not too bad. Continuing to look for rust, this was visible behind the bumper: So I took the wheelarch liner, sill and wheelarch trims off for a proper look. A bit of rot there but not catastrophic, also a bit on the wheel tub but again fairly easy to repair. rear end of the sill has gone, the rest of it is good though: The other side is starting to go, but is nowhere near as bad. I think it will pass a test OK. Finally while digging I noticed the back box: So the shopping list is a 'new' manifold, replace or re-silver one headlight, welding to sill and arch, fuel leak to fix, new back box and an intensive clean-up. I think it will be quite a rewarding little project if not particularly ground-breaking, the bones are there of a very nice car. I have got a new 'proper' CO2 bottle and sheet of steel at the ready and will get stuck in next week.... more pics soon!

Nice find, there's just something about an Alfa......you seem to have done well with rust, seeing as the car was originaly made from alka seltzer tablets!I presume those hip-cat wheel trims look even better in the bin.......

very nice car, i am still in love with them.... the wheel trims are very nice , too. Why did you bin them ? ;D I had one of the last 75s built, there was a special edition incl. Recaro seats, special 2-piece alloys and a small badge with the production number on it on the center console. I loved this car, though i spent almost 2.000 DM (~1000 Euros] in the first two weeks.... after a couple of weeks i sold it then, as i realized, there were a couple of more DMs to spend... still made a good profit... if you are looking for spares, i could have a look, my old boss (who had an Alfa dealership in the 90s) still has quite a large stock of OEM parts.... as he will be my new boss from march on, i could have a look, what is left....

Out of all that, get the fueltank fixed 1st - good 2nd hand fuel tanks don't exsist anymore, & they are a curse word to repair, & will always spring a leak somewhere new...............it was the bain of my life for at least 2 months !!!!!!! I will find out a source of spares for you (somewhere close hopefully)

Cheers JATMT!!!!
I really need an exhaust manifold, there is one on the bay but it will be nearly £40 including shipping. i'm hoping I can find one for less than that, though I will get it if I have no other leads by the end of the auction...
Weldfest begins tonight!!

that rust is nothing serious for a 75 from 1989 I've seen much worse cases lose the seatcovers too a lot of parts are no longer available for these cars, like petroltanks, but rear brake calipers are getting hard to find too love the colour by the way

Nice work! How did you get on with the Aframe? A-frame is amazing! I cannot get my head around how the towed car steers itself, it just does! Magic.

Good score, the rust doesn't really look as bad as it could have been as well! Especially by Alfa standards *shudder*

So, I have done a load of welding on the Alfa this week. I started by tackling the worst bit, the rotten NSR arch. The front and rear edges were gone and I thought it would be better to repair them individually than replace the entire arch. Conveniently there is a plastic wheelarch trim so the repairs need not be 100% perfect cosmetically. Patching the inner arch: I replaced the rotten bit beneath the bumper: Then I started on the rear of the sill, the inner needed a tiny patch, then a good dousing in weld-through zinc paint: I reconstructed it a bit at a time. This might not look like a lot of work but I have been in the garage till 10pm every night this week! No pics from the Friday night but I repaired the holes in the inner wheel 'tub' (in the pics, above the spring) and painted it all up with zinc paint. I also took the fuel tank out, in order to sort the manky pipes and fuel leak. While doing this I got a load of petrol in my ear, which interestingly is among the most excruciatingly painful experiences I have ever had. The tank is not rotten so I will re-fit and re-seal the sender and repaint the tank, then reinstall it with new pipes. More pics when i do more work!!!1

Awesome progress there.
Always fancied getting a 75 at some point (and a GTV as well). Never seen the rear suspension before it looks quite an interesting setup.
How good a weld do you get with weld through primer. I have never used it myself before but often thought about it particularly on sills. I was once told years ago by someone not to use it on anything structural as it weakens the weld (this could be a load of wibblepoo but I still havent used it)

Not been terribly productive this week; I finished welding the inner wheelarch and primed and sealed everything (forgot to take a pic). Then I attacked the fuel leak by whipping the tank out: It is a 'new' replacement tank but is already starting to bleb up a bit so in true R-R style I cleaned it up and gave it the satin black treatment: While it was out I attacked the rust hole in the boot floor: Again I welded and sealed it all up then forgot to take a 'finished' pic Next I attacked the sender unit as it was this that was leaking. The return pipe stub was rotten so I chopped it off and cemented a new piece of copper pipe into place with 'chemical metal': There was also A tiny pinhole in it so I sealed that up too. I let the stuff cure for a day then I put it all back together with loads of 'police lubricant' (copper grease) And reinstalled the tank with new bolts, and new fuel pipes and hoses and clips. At this point I realised that there was a tiny bit of movement in the new pipe stub - the chemical metal had let me down. What a load of bo11ox that stuff is, the pipe was a really neat tight fit in the sender, all it had to do was seal it but it did not work. So I took the tank out again, removed the sender, and now I will take it to work on Monday and repair it by soldering (what I would have done in the first place if I had thoght of it ) what a waste of time. I bought that manifold off ebay and am waiting for it to arrive (pay £13 for '48h' delivery then wait a week for the fuggin thing) that will be the next job.
