Make it back onto the road that is? Currently in Birmingham, 40 miles away from me because the clutch is not working. My mechanic fast losing faith in it getting back on the road mainly because I think he just considers it a knackered old Metro rather than a Retro wonder like I do! He's getting it on the ramp in the next few days to check the underside. Both sills already welded with a new hole in the rear of one of them. I'm just struggling to know what to do if he condemns it. He doesn't want to waste too much time trying to sort the clutch out if the rest isn't any good. I don't want it to become Mini-fodder though! Ideas? Rob a bank may have to be one of them due to the lack of funds.

Are you open to part ex? Did I say it was knackered? I meant it is in gorgeous condition and runs like a dream!

We'll see. I'm off to France for a few days at the end of the week. I'll get the verdict probably Tuesday next week...
Don't really want to break it, would prefer for someone with some welding skills to say "Blimey, that 1.3 HLS is a rarity these days. I'd better use my super powers to save it!"

Hi, ah, thanks Matt. I am a bear of very little brain (or is that just a fooked memory?!). I've been told by the previous owner that it just needs a hole sorting in the sill but to be honest, until it has been up on the ramp, I can't say further than that. I'll get back to you!
Still need to work out what is wrong with the clutch. Problem is, it went while my mate was driving it (still his car then) and he stripped it down to have a look. Buggered a seal up or something, took it apart again and then bought another car instead! My poor mechanic is now trying to work out what he has/hasn't done.

Ill give ya £20 for it for metro racing! These are 100% better than the K series metros.

Hey, that looks OK to me! Clutch is straightforward, but not a nice job; is it knackered or is it a hydraulic problem? Bits are all available and fairly cheap!

I have these conversations with my mechanic, with EVERY car I have owned (except the one he sold me!)! Metros are built in a funny way with the subframe thingy stuck in with the petrol tank or summat. etc etc. Thing is if my garage/MOT costs are less than £500 per year for my daily, I think thats winning, cos they are not free to run, wish they were, at least petrol is cheap in these. market value is a funny thing. If you like it, assess how much it would take to keep it getting worse and clutch fixed etc. if you want summat else they sell away, but its worth little without a ticket. For the record - retro machine. is it a 998, or a 1275cc er?
|
|
it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

1275cc. I do want to save it and to hell with the cost really. I've paid nowt for it (just the value of the tax) which gives some lee-way. I'm not sure what the exact problem is - haven't seen the car since the clutch hydraulics were still in pieces. I get the feeling he just doesn't want to do the job which is a pain as I can't drive it anywhere else!

I can't even remember the last time I saw a HLS on the road! They were all 1.3's weren't they? After seeing what can be done with them, it's gotta be kept surely ;D Imo the front end is far smarter than the later models, a bit more aggressive.

Right, more news. The clutch arm is operating but the clutch does not disengage. Either the bloke who owned if left something out or something broke before and he's change stuff like the slave cylinder without considering an internal fault. He did tell me that he changed the thrust bearing although why you'd do this and not the entire clutch I don't know...
Anyone got any idea what may have failed?
With Matt's kind offer of welding, as long as it isn't completely rotten underneath (and I don't think it is) then this baby will be saved for sure!
I really like the looks of the thing. Can't compete with a certain very low beige mk1 Metro but it's still nice!

has he put the right kind of thrust bearing in? Sounds like the problem is between the clutch mechanism and the clutch itself -> thrust bearing problem.

Just stick a new clutch in and make sure you check the lever arm is not worn out at he same time, its not that hard even if you have to hook the engine out, its a days work imo

The weird thing with metros someone mentioned is that to remove the fuel tank you have to take off the rear subframe. Not that weird really but a pain in the ass.
If the clutch arm is moving and theres a good "feeling" on the clutch pedal it sounds that the clutch plate is seized. If theres a big yard availiable bump start it in gear and drive round in circles with the clutch pedal depressed and eventually the clutch will free itself.

The car has been sitting so it could just be seized. But, the clutch definitely did fail for some reason which is why it ended up sitting! I'll pass the info on to my mechanic (he'll be chuffed!) and will let you know when I'm back next week.
