yay! pretty damn sure it wil pass though Ian!! It didn't Pass Emissions (De-catted C36GET engine) Play in lower front wishbone ball joints - deemed to dangerous to drive and therefore they were unable to brake test the car (LSD so brake rollers are a no no) Emissions is an easy thing to resolve - I just have to weld some cats back in but I didn't really want to do that and after some discussion - pre 1992 - WOL chassis number - the tester consulted his book of rules and decided it could be tested as a non cat car. That left - Play in lower front wishbone ball joint well that was resolved by doing something I haven't done since 1991 - I paid the garage to fix it as I don't have a window for getting the car fixed myself and back for a re-test. Once fixed - brake test carried out and I got a white sheet of paper that means game on for Le Mans I'll be using that garage again So tomorrow's task is rent (Tax) in the window and a few little jobs to do as well as load it up for a 500 mile drive having had just 35 miles to check it out.....

YES! That is all. Hopefully this is a good omen for Vaux/Opels having last minute MoTs before roadtrips..

a few little jobs to do as well as load it up for a 500 mile drive having had just 35 miles to check it out..... Hurrah! That's how roadtrips should be done and how stories are made. No good story starts with, "it failed the pre trip inspection so we stayed home with a nice cup of tea instead!"

Great thread! Good to see all of the rot cut out and repaired. How do you find sourcing parts? I bought number 333 a few weeks ago and the gear gator surround is in 3 bits and I can't source a new one and I haven't been able to find one in a scrap yard yet.

Great thread! Good to see all of the rot cut out and repaired. How do you find sourcing parts? I bought number 303 a few weeks ago and the gear gator surround is in 3 bits and I can't source a new one and I haven't been able to find one in a scrap yard yet. The rubber one or the leather upper? My advice will always be join a club that specialises in the car, you would not believe the parts that are available and have been remanufactured, situation is much better these days

The rubber gator below is split and the plastic surround is smashed into 3 pieces that the leather goes into. It sounds like joining the autobahnstormers is worthwhile, I wasn't sure about paying £25 to join a club & forum where I couldn't see what they had to offer before hand.
You weren't heading down the M20 this morning were you?
Thanks

Eh? That's twice as much mpg as I got out of my GSi. Shouldve turbo'd it.

Well done!! I'm gutted I won't be there, the car is just not ready and it's quite a long way Can't wait to see pics of the event, you might surprise a few people here, they'll think it's just a granny-spec saloon with a wing!

OK Back home So 1038 miles completed in a long weekend 39.6 gals of fuel consumed Total cost of fuel £249 (euro fuel converted to £) Average mpg 26.21 Best mpg 29.85 on the way home (27.5 on the way down) Oil consumption was approx 0.25L there is a reason for this - de-catted LC's are notorious for having a 50 a day habit at tickover - it's not funny when people ask if your car is broken or comment that they hope you haven't got far to get home....... Jobs to do..... Stop the smoke Fix the abs Fit the grundig cd changer and head unit Replace the speaker wiring to the back Give the car a proper clean inside and out Fit the front arch liners Under seal the rear arches Some other stuff I've forgotten So onto the smoke the major cause is the turbo drains back up at tickover and as a result oil passes out of the turbos into the exhaust side and inlet side, the exhaust side creates an acrid smelly smoke that is very blue - think cooked oil rather than combusted oil. Then when you pull away the oil that has leaked on the inlet side gets sucked in and burnt creating a nice big cloud on pullaway. So a clever chap on the ABS forum came up with a test to determine if applying a bit more vac at tickover would stop the smoke Tonight I carried out the test - no changes - engine warm and ticking over after a run - I can almost predict the smoke with a countdown 5, 4, 3, 2, & 1 Bingo Stop the engine and modify the breather system to apply more vac at tickover (you can't run the engine like this but it proves a point) Start the engine - yep as you open the filler cap you can hear the slurp of a vacuum being lost - didn't seem to be difficult to remove the cap so was happy the vac level wasn't silly OK some residual smoke still in the exhaust so I did a count down 5, 4, 3, 2, & 1 and then took some more photos Ran it for ages - then I stopped the engine and took the bung out - I'll let you guess how long it took to smoke again........ starts with 5 So now I need to follow his lead and create a breather system that allows vac in the crank case at tickover but isn't pressurised when engine is on boost. Oh and it needs to look factory rather than a lash up
