Wow I hope I'll make it as well then, I've never seen a Lotus Carlton/Omega in the metal before Keep your fingers crossed.... In an amazing stroke of luck BG Developments has a seal kit in stock so ÂŁ15 later it's in first class post to me today, thanks Caroline for great service. No activity tonight, monthly Norfolk mountain rescue club meeting to attend and talk curse word about cars over a beer and sarnies.

Oh and these bloody brackets....... two identical brackets about the same length as a packet of Rizlas Not a scooby where they go... Still you always have stuff left over don't you!!!! Now know where they go and I don't have to take anything apart to fit them - glad I know too because they are critical parts......

I spotted an Omega or senator something the other day here in nelson. Similar shape to your lotus Ian. Looked cool and a very rare sight in NZ as we mainly have Holdens when it comes to big GM cars.
That is all. As you were. Btw I am still looking forward to ride in this car when next over- I told Hannah and she is keen too. We will be over again next year but I will tell you in advance so you can put the kettle on.

There are a couple of LC's in OZ that I know of not sure about NZ That is all. As you were. Btw I am still looking forward to ride in this car when next over- I told Hannah and she is keen too. We will be over again next year but I will tell you in advance so you can put the kettle on. Always welcome here Alex - you both are. Anyway back to the grind Good job I did get two seals as one got "clubbed to death" but the second one went perfectly.... While I was waiting the obligatory 30 mins seal in brake fluid pre soak stage (twice) I adjusted up the hand brakes inside the rear discs and then adjusted up the cable. Now it's on at 3 clicks just where I like it to be.... It'll soon bed down to 8 or more with a bit of use..... Now the hand brake is done the huge heat shield can go back on. It's minging and the rest is quite clean so I may have to degrease it and see what it looks like then..... Then I think I'm going to sack it of for the rest of the night cos the mozzys seem to be out in force tonight and I'm dinner it seems.

Norfolk Mountain Rescue? Is that some sort of legitimate sounding curse word take excuse to meet your mates in the pub? Absolutely not we've all got hacked up 4x4's and all the rescue gear, the trucks have "One wife Livid" on the back. It's just a shame that in the last 20 years we've been meeting to discuss how we would handle a rescue situation on Norfolks highest mountain (castle hill, which is a massive 35 ft above sea level and dominates the landscape for yards) we've never been needed..... Alternatively you may well have hit the nail on the head

Continuing to try and hit my deadline time for a quick update Brakes now fully bled and I'm done with them - pedal feel is excellent. Handbrake is still on 3 clicks Fuel tank is in Fuel pump and filter assembly all in and hooked up - couple of clips to fit to neaten it all up Suspension pump fitted and shocks linked in Anyway Carbon canister is in and plumbed up I'd have had a lot harder time of it working out where some bits go but for David Franczak and his brilliant Lotus Carlton website - I've stopped looking in the workshop manual and look at his web pages first for how things go together. Only on the rare occasion when I still can't make sense of it do I reach for the manual  If you fancy looking at a proper Resto job on an LC Click me for his siteJust trying to link all the relevant components together neatly before I power up the components - might need to chuck some jungle juice in the tank first. Anyway with a working compressor I've been buggering around with the ride height adjustment and checking for leaks with a paintbrush and fairy liquid water mix Looks like I have none on first pass checks which is good news - bad news is when the suspension is pumped up and at full height (dragster-r-us) you cans see where the shocks aren't painted  Oh well a job for tomorrow when it's cranked up to full height again On the shopping list for tomorrow is lots of P-clips - small ones so I can fasten the loom properly A two wire connector block so I can wire up the fuel pump (yes I did but I'd rather do that than shear off the terminals on the pump - they look fragile as heck) Then exhaust back on (still two minds on installing the cat flaps) Then I might have to see if I can get it running again

Well I did nothing on the car at the weekend as we had relatives over for the weekend and various activities scheduled across the weekend so I was banned from playing with cars.......... Monday night I finally got the car back in the garage - yes the Mini has left the building So tonight I decided to start the other large task and change the timing chains Now I'll not fess up to the details but paranoia when I purchased the LC 14 years ago resulted in a "hot swap" of the chains with minimal dis-assembly, it was never intended as a long term solution but a just in case my car had one of the dodgy batch of chains that got fitted to a lot of engines at the time. Anyway a proper dis-assembly and change of guides etc was the target So I started at 7pm and by 11pm the chains were out and in the bin. What I found was both amusing and interesting This is the inside of the lower cyl head timing cover and this is the rear of the damper/timing/front pulley assembly It made me chuckle

That's awesome! This may have been covered but did you know the engine was the "last"?

Anyway tonight I've been cracking away on the timing chain change
Secondary chain tensioner had some deep grooves in it as expected so the blades and guides were swapped out for the ABS club parts
The straight guide had no wear at all - no cracks or heat damage so that's gone back in the engine - normally they don't have much wear but time and heat cycles normally mean they are cracked all over so I would replace then regardless of wear.
The curved guide had no wear on the face and also no cracks or heat damage but it had a really weird wear pattern one the shoulder closest to the engine - like the link pins on the chain were sticking out, Then I spotted why the hinge pin had not been fully inserted into the block. So that guide got replaced for a new one and this time the hinge pin was pushed fully home.
New timing chains all back in - front cover was the usual PITA to get back in without pushing the sump gasket back in - normally I would change the sump gasket but then I'd need to drop the downpipes so that can wait till I pull the engine out this winter.
Turned the engine over by hand to check the timing again and all was good.
Oil lines next tomorrow then I'll prime the pump fit a new oil filter and some fresh oil and see if I can get the oil pressure light out without running the engine. once I can see oil in the head I'll be happy and I close the engine up again.

So got into the garage at 7pm I know everyone likes pictures so this is what the engine looked like at 7pm when I opened the bonnet to start And about 5 mins ago when I finished for the night at quarter to midnight and the engine looked like this So a whole heap of progress not visible to the eye or a wasted evening? The gearbox bellhousing is now attached again (had to undo the bolts to allow the sump to drop) The engine mounts are now bolted firmly One of the new heatshields is fitted rather than hanging there All the sump bolts are checked and tight The oil pump pick up (internal to the sump but external feed to the pump) is back together And all the sensors removed to get the timing cover off are back in place and hooked up The oil pump was primed and the sump is full of oil All the oil lines are now connected and secure Chargecooler pump is now back together and plumbed up Aircon compressor and engine bracket is back on Idler wheel and tensioner wheel for the serpentine belt is back on The oil pump was primed and the sump is full of oil and after a few cranks the oil light no longer shone brightly but dimed for a second and then went out......
