Been scanning a few "real" photos in today so thought I'd do an ex-ride thread on this. I don't have many pictures of it as I had it for a relatively short time though I did do quite a lot to neaten it up. Lets just say it was a pretty wild and crazy thing to be driving daily when I was 19. I didn't tell my parents I'd bought it for about two weeks and parked it round the corner for that time! This was at the supernats at Knebworth about 2 weeks after purchase. By then I'd already re-mounted the front grill which was also white when bought and whitewalled the tyres with paint. These other pics were taken a few weeks later after the NASC nats at Chelmsford. I know this because I drove up there with Simon Watts and he striped the grill shell at the show - his first striping in the country as I recall. The indicators seem to have gone walkabout (can't remember if I actually had any at the front now) and I'd made a seat to replace the original falling apart diamond pleat job. I shudder when I remember how I constructed this! Also added the scallops and things. Engine was 100E with Aquaplane carbs and 4-2-1 exhaust and I cleaned, polished and painted all sorts. These were some mad times for me and looking back I don't know how I managed to get away with some of the stuff that went on with this car but I don't regret any of it!

thats awesome seth, love it! bet the chicks at uni did too eh! how come you didnt own it for long? Unfortunatly it never made it to uni I basically only used it for about 3 months as it was when my dad was ill which is partly the reason I bought it - as a kind of release of tension and so that he could see the kind of thing I wanted to do. (my dad died the following Spring but no sympathy required now please - just telling the story! ) I actually used it as a daily driver in that time including commuting to Welwyn for work and getting very wet occasionally. It didn't even seem to mind when little puddles formed in the spark plug recesses in the head! There were various things wrong with it and the final nail in its coffin was a huge crack in one of the engine mounts. I could fix it in half an hour now but back then I had only really done rudimentry maintenance and it was beyond me. Before I went to uni I took it over to my grandads garage to store it for winter but it couldn't stay there so it was stripped down and some of the parts sold off/exchanged. I've still got some of it though It was actually really fun to drive cos it was in no way overpowered but with the crossplies on I could drift it round roundabouts with ease ;D Was quite quick off the line cos of weighing nothing but there's a huge gap between 2nd and top in the 100E boxes (3 speed) and you had to really rev it or it would bog down a bit cos of the gearing/tyre size. I still have a hankering for another fun little roadster. Nothing can compare with the experience!

sweet looking little rod.
A guy came to the last Derby meet I went to and he had one with a Holbay lump in it. You don;t need a lot of power to have a lot of fun in one of those. A mate used to have one with an Avenger 1500 lump in it and that was lethal!
I **will** have one of these before I get too old to enjoy it.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

(Seth and I have been firm friends for 20 years now and I even gave him a lift to pick up the T when he bought it!)
Now Seth... you didn't tell the best story...
It was Saturday night and as was far too often the case when we were 19 we decided to head into the West End (London) and cruise around a little while.
To say the '23 was a little ricketty is a major understatement and I nearly soiled myself every time it went over 20MPH... which with a 100E engine wasn't really that often.
So... going through the outskirts of Covent Garden there is an almighty clunk and a shower of sparks behind us! We pull over to see what the problem is and the petrol tank is hanging off, dangling down, pooring petrol all over the street.
How one of the sparks did not ignight the fuel and send us sky-high is still a mystery to me!
If I remeber correctly, the fire brigade came out to wash the street down and we then waited until 5:00AM for a recovery truck.
Ah... those were the days!!!

Cheers for telling that story Ash! I ust want to say I wasn't responsible for the build of that thing and was too young to know better! The tank had been fitted using a couple of bent bits of 18/20g steel and it fatigued/sheared off the first time I filled it right up. Was remounted by some mates (with a welder) using 3mm thick box/angle etc. Didn't fall off again. The firemen weren't happy though.
