Here it is, after someone decided they wanted the bit of road I was on more than I did, successfully writing off my '87 Golf I've finally replaced it... It's a 1991 Big Bumper car, high mileage but recent new engine, lowered on Eibach kit, Eibach ARB's, G60 arches and splitter, complete G60 Recaro interior, OZ wheels, PAS, Scorpion Stanless zorst, Short shift kit and recently rebushed gearlinkage, Kamei front strip, Sony stereo, Factory roof, Full Cat 1 security. Loads of work recently done by Dubsport. More details on my own website here

Yeah, I've got a set of Azev A's in black at home, I'm thinking of fitting them for sure, the black would make it look a bit edgier too... As for the brow, I tend to agree but I don't want to pull it off only to find the plastic underneath hasn't faded like the grille around it, the last thing I want it a two-tone front end!

Just back from GTi festival with a slightly disappointing PB of 16.3, I think this was down to a combination of spinning the wheels all the way thru first gear (kippered front tyres and a track I'd describe as marginal at best) and the strongest headwind I've ever experienced at the pod, 28mph! Yeah 28mph headwind!
I was hoping for a low 15 as the car seems a bit quicker than the last one, but we shall see, I think I'll get some new tyres and take the "magic" ecu from the old one with me to Bug Jam and see if that makes it any quicker.

Ok, I did it... Quite a bit of scrubbage over even the tinyest bumps now, but I think it looks cool. I think I need to de-lip the arches to give them a little more room on the outside edge, I think the offset of the Azev's isn't the best of a lowered Mk2, they were ok on the stock height one but I could really do with sorting this one... Oh yeah, has anyone got any experience with helicoiling wheelbolt threads? Before After... And one this morning at work looking cool in the carpark... A slightly better version of the above, taken just now and not photoshopped in any way, I love the color looks on this one... Let me know what people think.

Problem is that it's the sidewalls that rub, not the tread, is dropping to 185's going to help? They're still the same width at the rim.

185's will be 10mm thinner than (if you're running 195's) so should help a bit...
a little 'clearancing' wouldn't go a miss though.
got the same problem on the 8v...

What's the difference with the 'magic' ECU? Is it one of the earlier ones with a more aggressive ignition advance curve or has the crystal been altered to change the rev limit perhaps? Looks ace with the black wheels by the way!

It's a really early one (1987), came from the first car, it's the only thing anyone could come up with as to why it was so quick, Danny Allen had an early 16v that had the same code ecu and that one was always quicker too, so we assumed it had a different program in it or something... One difference I know it had was that it had NO rev-limit, after missing a shift at Summer Nationals last year I looked down at the tach needle pointing at the Red on the petrol guage! If the revs continued linearly that would be nearly 11,000 RPM... Can anyone confirm which engine this is? I was sold it as a Seat Cupra engine (which would be ABF) and I'm reasonably sure it is (I have NO reason at all to question the seller, he's a good bloke and I DO trust him, I'm just looking at upgrades), the sticker on the top of the cambelt has "ABF" on it, but it's sooo faded it could be the start of a word or something... That alternator does look very high, and there is evidence of a small amount of rubbing on the underside of the bonnet (indicating tall block), the metering head and air-filter arrangement is different from my old KR too... Is there an easy way to tell? If this is an ABF can anyone confirm that adding the cams and magic ECU from my donor KR will induce pant wetting performance for no money?!?!

Regarding checking which engine it is - what does it say on the logbook, has it been updated if the engine has been swapped? If it's an ABF (2 litre) then it should feel a lot more torquey low down in the rev range compared to a KR (1.8) car. You can check the engine number, should be stamped on the front centre of the block just under where the head attaches. It's difficult to see with the engine in the car but you can usually make it out with a mirror and a torch, on a flat panel just above the centre water outlet. Failing that, on the bottom back of the block it will be stamped with either '1.8' or '2.0' but that may well be covered by the bracket for the rear engine mount so hard to see.
