I thought I'd wait untill it's finished, but sod it. Although still very much in the beginning, here's a few random pictures of my 100A-project. Bought it in October 2004. I used it as a daily driver until November 2005. Big mistake, salty winter roads + freeze & thaw = rust. This is how she sits before restoration. Looks better in the photos than it is. Performance wise, I'll be fitting a A14-engine, with 79mm diameter Toyota 4k Wisecos and Eagle Honda B18 conrods, together with the A15-crankshaft which has a longer stroke than the A14. The cylinderhead is from an A15-engine and it'll be ported and fitted with larger valves. For the cam, I'll be using a Kent D6 290°/108° 11,66mm profiled for starters. Fuel will be supplied by a pair of Dellortos and the Cherry should be shifting via the 5-speed transmission from a N10 Cherry Coupé. Plans for upgrading the brakes and the rest of the chassis are still a bit unclear, but I've purchased a pair of VW Golf I/II calipers for wented discs which I'll look into more closely. Front suspension will be made to be fully adjustable to allow me to lower the front around 10cm. For the rear I'll be using N10 drums and supporting arms and ca. 7cm shorter and stiffer springs. EDIT: updated piccy urls and removed some.

Wow! Very thorough job, look forward to seeing results. Should go well seeing as how little they weigh.

Thanks a bunch. Performance-wise I'm not going to go too crazy with it and I'm looking for real-world performance for everyday (summer)use. 130hp/150Nm @ 6000 rpm from the wheel should be realistic without sacrificing low and mid range too much and enough for a car that weights 660kg.

Where did you get the A14 tune up bits from?? Or just collected over time? If you mean the random A14 and A15 bits, those I've been gathering mainly from Finland since I got the car. Thanks to our government adding a ridicilous tax on new cars being sold, we have the second oldest car base in Europe (after Greece), so finding bits for 70's and 80's cars is still quite easy. The A14 & A15 blocks, heads, cranks, conrods, pistons and A14 gearbox cost me around 150€ for the whole lot. The 5-speed box is pretty hard to find here so I had to dish 200€ for it. Having a pretty active group of Datsun/Nissan enthusiasts also helps when looking for bits and pieces.

Nice work. Keep at it!
I have to ask. Are you Finnish? Your English puts some of us to shame!

Cheers folks for the encouraging words. But, I've only done some of the welding (on the floor etc. places that are invisible) so most of the welding on the exterior panels etc. has been done by a man who has more experience on it. dollywobbler, My english might be better than the average "rally-finglish" of Tommi Mäkinen & co. but it hardly puts anyone ashame. I'm also finnish but don't hold that against me.

lol! Cheers Mako. I met a lovely female Finn in Sweden over the summer and was impressed with her English too. But then, turns out that she actually works in London!
Look forward to seeing the finished car!

fantastic. we never got these in Australia, probably a little bit too small for our roads.
So are there many pre 80's Mazdas over there or have they fallen from salty roads as well?

I reckon the Cherry would've done great over there on the outback, with that 4x4 'escue chassis they came with from the factory. As far as older Mazda's go, I can currently see a couple of late 60's 1200's Marellas and 1500's on sale. Also a 929 HT. But Datsun and Toyota were the most imported japs over here.

The engine is basically a copy* of the BMC 998 cm3 used in the Minis with improved capability of not leaking its oil all over the parking lot. EDIT: *engine sits on top of the gearbox
