About a 2 years ago my dad found a cheap caravan chassis advertised, that had been used for carrying around a midget. When we went to pick it up, the guys son told us a different story about it , but said we could have it for free. I got it home and found the brakes werent connected, and didnt actually work anyway, there bed was rotten and it was generally curse word. I set about taking it apart (with a grinder, socket set and cans and cans of wd40) and found that everything in the suspension area was shot. So we've been on the look out for braked trailer axles for a couple of years with little success, so now we've decided to buy a new one. We bought a new coupling off ebay for £45 (£200 from Brian James) which will be fitted once its all been welded and painted. Here's a picture of it's current state: Adam

All I can say is it's a good job it didn't cost you anything. That way, spending money on it won't be quite so painful

This will be interesting to see develop.
I've been thinking of building one for myself for some time... how will the costs of the bits you need stack up against buying a secondhand car trailer?

Have to be careful using caravan chassis as a lot of the time they havent been built with the intention of carrying much weight. Tht one does look fairly strong though. I was going to build a transporter from scratch for myself but total cost for new parts for a decent sized one amounts to £500-£700 which is why I ended up buying the one I have now for £400 which will carry upto 2600kg. Secondhand suspension units normally sell for upto 75% of new ones and you can often find when you get them they need new bearings or the rubbers are starting to collapse so you are better checking them before handing over your money.
Be nice to see how it progresses

It is a fairly solid chassis although I will be strengthening it further.

I'm all in favour of making rather than buying - will follow this with interest esp as it's one less caravan on the road

we once had 3 caravans in our yard, i took grat pleasure in destroying one down to the bed with a sledge hammer unfortunatly the actual bed was a tad shot for it to be converted

The trailer I brought my Mk1 Golf home on was home made apparently, you'd never know it to look at it though. My brother in law's uncle is some kind of ace welder I think, I'll find a pic and post it up. I assume it must have been made from a caravan chassis or selection of other trailers as it looked like a professional one! Edit - here's a pic, not great but you get the idea.

i think you should get away with boxing in the c - sections, and possibly add some diagonals to spread the load more evenley. dose the axle your using kick out enough to allow the car to fit between them when its on the trailer?? also to make it look more pro, use ally chequerplate, is a little barry, but barry chequerplate is usually on there plastic mats....lol

The axle is being custom made I can get ally chequerplate on the cheap from school, so there will probably be a fair bit going on! Adam

Well.... here is the replacement in all its glory! Needs a bit of welding, a coat of paint and some brake shoes but should be great!
