It's just occurred to me that I have owned this car off and on for two years, but I've never started a thread on it. So, here goes;
It's a genuine 1275GT (XE2D2 chassis no.) in Sandglow. I owned it, had fun with it, sold it, bought a 1380 Cooper, tuned it some more, fitted straight cut gears, enjoyed it,
sold it and took my GT back as a part exchange against the Cooper. So, she's mine again.
This is how it looking when I owned it first time 'round (sorry about the size of the pics);
Notice the cheeky ride height at the rear and the Special Tuning shields on the A-panels. The yellow clubman in the last picture is snapdragonclubman's car. I like to think of
it as the sister car to my GT due to the very similar spec.
My GT is not particularly special, but it holds many fond memories for me and Snapdragonclubman, blasting it around that summer I'd like to think it inspired Chris to buy
his Clubby.
Anyway, this is what the new owner did to it;
It doesn't look too bad in the pics but he 'treated' to a very cheap respray, plenty of over-spray, some ill fitting Sportspack arches, the 7x13" Minilites (that were
previously fitted to Chris' car) and some cheap bucket seats. What you can't see in the picture are the butchered front wings that he had cut to clear the wheels. He did not
refold the flange (huh, I said flange) back on to the wings, he did not repaint the areas that he had cut (including the the flaky paint that resulted), he also 'missed' a few
times when drilling the holes for the arch mounting screws Thanks Lee! Not to worry, he meant well.
And this is how it looks as of this afternoon;
Obviously it's a work in progress.
Note the rag top , just like my Golf You can more clearly see the butchered arches and the dent in the wing where a kind local introduced his hoof to it while it was parked
outside my house
I have changed the 7x13" Minilites to 6x12" Superlites, for better handling. I have replacement wings (Genuine items), group 5 arches, replacement GT stripes and ST shields
and a few tuning goodies waiting to go on it. The back will also be lowered back down to where it was when I owned it before.
The engine is not the original GT engine anymore after some light fingered traveller helped themself to it after I removed it for a rebuild It now runs a MG Metro engine with
Maniflow LCB, Play Mini exhaust, K&N filter and stub stack, aftermarket inlet and a new needle to correct the mixture. It also has Spax and hi-los at the rear.
People tend to get turned off when you mention MG Metro engines and stage 1 kits, but Chris's Clubman is the same setup and we managed a 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds,
which I think is respectable even by modern standards. Real budget performance if you ask me.
